I was told by a equine nutritionist that my horse needed to be on Renew Gold. My vet put her on Purina Senior years ago and she's been on that since then. However, she is ulcer prone and I want to make her feel her best. I FINALLY found Renew Gold in my area, but I have heard some bad things about it like some horses lost weight( mine needs to fill out) and that you HAVE to feed a vit/mineral additive.... ?
But then I have heard it's great for horses that need a high fat, low starch diet and it's good for ulcer prone...
Right now my mare is getting a TON of senior and I'm thinking it's time to change to something that will work better for her as well as better for my wallet...

Please any input would be great!

I don't feed grain so I do feed a vitamin/ mineral supplement with the renew gold. I also feed alfalfa. My guys have 80 acres to graze, all are fat and shiny, even my hard keeper. I put the RG and vitamins in a little soaked molasses free beet pulp. My feed bill is around $175/month for 4 horses

Vets are not nutritionists.  I like Renew Gold, but it may not be the fix you need.  Recommendations are to feed a pound to a pound and a half per day.  That may not be enough to add weight.  What sort of hay are you using?  Purina Senior is a complete feed and to use it is expensive, I'd look into a concentrate that does not include roughage if your hay is good quality.

kmcsunshine- She is getting a mixed grass hay right now, not the BEST quality but it's what our barn has... It's not that she is skinny but I would like her a bit more filled out, especially topline. What would you suggest feed wise then?

Thanks rodeomom3! Do you put in beet pulp just for volume?

We feed Renew Gold, but horses are on free choice hay.  There are several feeds that are advertised for ulcer prone horses including Patriot, Total Equine and Purina Wellsolve.  You might just add a fat supplement to your senior and reduce the total amount.  Rice Bran, flax, various oils are good.

Yes, I use the beet pulp for calories plus I like the fiber and moisture they get from soaking it. Mine don't need the calories so they only get about a cup, I increase the amount in the winter. I feed good quality alfalfa for their protein. My feed program evolved to no grain because of colic and ulcer issues. I have fed this way for 4 years and horses have never been better, running hard and feeling good.

I have a gelding who has a little trouble keeping muscle over his topline. I feed renew gold, alfalfa pellets/cubes, grostrong bit/mineral supplement and acess Tia round bale of medium quality. His topline is filling in nicely since upped his renew gold to 1 1/2 lbs per winwillows instruction. I will be backing the RG to 1 lb soon. Also it really helped to have his teeth floated. It was time to anyway. Contact winwillows, he will be able to answer your concerns.

I hate to hijack your thread... But has anyone experienced their horse's coat shedding after starting to feed it and growing back more beautiful? I started my gelding on RG about 6 weeks ago and also started him on a biotin supplement to help with hooves. About two weeks after he started shedding all his brown hair (he's supposed to be black under perfect conditions) and he's grown the most beautiful black coat. I wasn't keeping him stalled at the time he started shedding, but he is stalled now due to injury. Anyone know if it was the RG or biotin supplement that caused the sudden change?!? (I'm not complaining!! Lol)

It is the RG.  I have one that is retired, he was just getting beet pulp and vitamins.  I decided to take him to ANHA so started legging him up at the first of July and giving him the RG.  He went from faded brown to his a dark black coat- and this is the middle of summer when he he is usually faded out.

All my horses here in Oklahoma have shed their summer coats and begun growing their winter one.  The RG will help coat quality, but it is also that time of year when an new coat that is not sunbleached comes in.

THE Muscle Mass or Performance Formula is a great vitamin/mineral supplement with amino acids. Muscle Mass is great for adding bulk and weight and very cost effective per day. With no special blends it is $65 and just add $5 for 1-2 special blends or $10 for 3-4. This is for 2 1/2 months worth.

I'd love for you to help get it here for around $30/bag. Cheapest I can get it is $48 and that's too much when I'm feeding 10 horses.

Where are you located? While it is illegal for us to tell a dealer what price to set, we may be able to direct you to a dealer that charges a more realistic price. Give us a call and we will try to help you find a fair deal.

Tractor Supply said they could get it for me, but I'd have to pay shipping and I think it was like $60/bag or something ridiculous.

Exleys in Jesup, Ga said he could get it, but with shipping it would be $48. Can't find anyone else that can get it.
