Just wanting to see the options out there. Can you tell me what the issue was, which ligament, how you treated it, if the horse came back sound or if you had issues later. Any and all info is great. I have researced until I am blue in the face.

I think mine actually hurt his when he cut his foot back in April. He started to have issues after I rode him after the cut healed, June. He was also sent back to the trainer for some riding for a week the end of July and had even bigger issues, we then knew something wasn't right. He was never lame though. It was diagnosed early Aug. I started him on Runners Relief about 3 weeks ago and today is day 4 or so that I haven't seen him hold it funny, point toe etc. Really hoping we are on the right path. I would love to know ALL the treatments everyone has done. Thank you in advance.

is yours torn or? Mine is only a strain I guess. I am so far from any lameness vets, most travel that we are able to use, so some of the therapy is unavailable to us.

My horse had some type of collateral ligament injury, which are the supporting ligaments on both sides of the pastern.

When he got the initial injury his leg swelled to the point we were initially concerned with cellulitis, but blood work came back clean. Anyways we had an ultrasound done which showed no tears or ruptures, but swelling and lameness were present. My prescription was 8 weeks off with hand walking. I went ahead and did 13 weeks off and during that time I alternated between sweating and cold hosing. Just about every time I had swelling I would do a 24 hour sweat with dmso and furazone or this green Epsom salt jelly. Between sweats and cold hosing I also kept all legs wrapped. I found this kept swelling down as well. I would make it a point to check and re wrap legs every day and would give a few hours without wraps for comfort too. I am in the process of bringing him back and according to my vet this should not be career ending and he will be able to return to full work soon. I am currently approved for light work. I just need to take things slow and work up gradually from there. So far we have a positive prognosis, but I am still nervous about it all.

This is what I'm dealing with. Mine is the outside lateral collateral ligament. Due to bad shoeing. I'm using laser , theraplate and ice vibe boots.

My good mare had a injury, the first time, was a soft tissue injury...not really ligament. She was 12, vet said give 13 months off, and re-evaluate. I did 9 months of that stall rest, with hand walking, BOT wraps. Ultrasounded her at 13 months, vet said she was good to try, walked her around for about 15 minutes, no tight circles, etc, and it flared up. Ended up giving her 3 years off. After 3 years, I decided to give her a try. She came back just as strong, running wise, if not stronger, then playing out in the field in March of this year, she strained in her other hind leg, her deep digital flexor tendon. It's been 6 months and the swelling in her leg has not gone down. She's turned out 24/7, no special treatments as I bred her in the Spring for a '15 foal. I'm sure she would have benefited from stall rest, but she's retired now. :)

My other mare, when she was 3 stuck a t-post through her leg, cut her check ligament? I think that's what it was called. Had her on stall rest for 4 months, with hand walking, and BOT wraps. Brought her back slowly her late 4 yr old year, then she sat. She's 6 now, she wont pass a flexion test on that leg as there's quite a bit of scar tissue, BUT she's sound travelling wise, and it doesn't bother her.

The way I look at it, if you give them the proper amount plus extra time off from their injury, they'll generally come back just fine. I didn't have the money to do all the different types of therapies that are available...but if you do, then by all means use them! :) Good luck!

I'm not able to spend tons on him. My husband was ready to ship him off the minute we found out. I've had nothing but bad luck lately it seems. I was never told what ligament, but it is whatever one/ones help hold the pastern in place. In the x ray the pastern is rocked forward on the bottom where it goes into the coffin joint area right above the coronet band. He has never been lame and no swelling, but of course I now think it had to have happened the same time he mysteriously cut that heel. It may have been swollen but he was in a cast for about a week and then support bandages after that.

Thank you to those that have answered. I am trying to be positive. It's nice to hear what others have done to heal them.

I would also like to know more. Mine was found by accident. My mare has battled a rare form of a respiratory infection this year. She is a hard one to diagnosis I believe she could cut one leg off and she would still run. She has ran true 1d times Nbha state, BBR world finals, top 15 CRRA rodeo ect. and been sick. I have felt HORRIBLE! At our last visit to Oakridge he noticed every 3rd step she was slightly off. He said she had a collateral ligament sprain. I freaked and was like what do I do? He said no worries and it would heal while she was off with the infection. We go back for our check up Tues. Just wondering on the average time off? I know he will be able to tell me more Tues. It has been 3 weeks since he has examined her.
