 Don't Wanna Make This Awkward

Location: Texas | Im in DFW are so trying to stay within 300 miles. Also I have an outstanding vet, one of the ones that gets constantly reccomended on here, but the lameness is just not getting fixed. If you take the horse to a different vet do you tell your regular vet? Do you still work with them on the lameness? I'm just so stressed and confused on handling this.. |

Location: Oklahoma | I would try a different vet. I know of vets that get reccommended on here and I have my own opinions. Doesn't mean it's a bad vet, I just want to use a different one if I don't feel like the problem is being found. I think a fresh set of eyes are a good thing... I have one gelding that I was told by a vet that would never be more than a trail horse and another (performance) vet said to leg him up and we'd see what kind of maintenance he's gonna require.
Dr. Propp in Pryor was the one I used with a lameness locator. I would not hestitate to send anyone to him, but he's probably a pretty good drive. I would bet that there are others in Texas closer for you.
Oakridge is probably closer for you. I have never used them, but I always hear good things.
Best of luck!! |

I was just about to edit my post to include them! If vetted a horse at BVEH in Stephenville and was really impressed. I didn't use the LL, but really liked the facility and in depth education I got on the horse! I see on the LL website that BVEH endorses them. |

Location: Texas | Okay, so do I tell my vet I want a second opinion? Do vets see this as rude if you they are your regualr vet? Do I let the other vet take all new xrays? |

This ought to help, but I'd make sure it's someone that's proficient in knowing how to read what the device sends you. |

You don't have to tell him anything, just make an appointment a go to a different vet if you feel you need to . |

This, but I'm not sure how you would address the x-rays. I always tell the vets that I've seen another vet for this and that and let them know so they have a better idea of what might be going on, but I haven't had anything on x-rays that I wanted transferred. |

Just ask for a copy for your records when you leave, they will make you a dvd.. you will always have them with you and don't have to call to have them released. |

 You get what you give

Location: Texas | Personally, being in vet school and having worked for a vet, as well as being a horse owner and barrel racer, I believe you should communicate with your vet that you are getting a second opinion. A lot of times, they have someone they recommend.
All you have to say is, I would like to take my horse where I can have the lameness locator used.
You don't HAVE to tell them anything, but the vet world is very small, and I would rather my vet find out from ME that I went to get a second opinion than finding out second hand. A lot of times, we would really like to know what they find as well so we can work together, or use it in the future. For the most part, vets treat each other as colleagues and not enemies, although we know people are people and it doesn't always work that way.
So, when I go for a second opinion, the vets I use have a good relationship with my regular go-to vet. They talk on the phone and discuss the best option. A lot of times, the 2nd vet will do the treatment and send me home with instructions for my regular vet to follow up with. A good vet will be respectful of whatever you want to do- if you want vet #2 to handle the whole thing, they should be professional about it. But I would give them the courtesy.

Many radiographs are now on databases where you can email them. That's what I get from my vet and I just forward the email to the next vet to look at. |
