| Well this week has been a nerve racking, anxiety stricken week and it's only Wednesday, thank goodness only two more days! First my husband was involved in a really bad accident Sunday, with a very angry cow, that put him in the hospital for three days and he's lucky to be alive. Then we get home from the hospital yesterday and I go check on the horses and my 2yr old decided to try a rip the side of her hoof off. I took her to the vet and luckily no tendons or ligaments were involved. They have me keeping it open, cleaning once a day and applying a steroid and antibacterial spray twice a day. I uploaded some pictures, tell me what you guys think. I told them I was worried about proud flesh but they said the steroid should help keep it from forming.

Location: Texas | Ouch! I have been recommended Underwoods with baking powder for proud flesh. After our last injury, I am a firm believer in Vetrisyn (?sp). You really need a {{hug}}. |

That's what I thought too, so when I first seen it I cleaned it and then applied underwoods and baking powder and headed to the vet. When I got there she told me not to use underwoods for leg injuries because it is known to promote proud flesh and the baking soda will trap the bacteria in the wound.

Thank you, he has a broken pelvis, shoulder, and his head is still swollen but he wouldn't stay in the hospital... I take him back next week to see what we are going to do next. |

How scary for your husband. Glad to hear he is doing better. I use plain old powdered lime on stuff like that. It keeps off proud flesh and flies. Running cold water on it also promotes healing. I pick off the lime when I wash it and just throw more on it. I swear it works. If I told my vet I did that he would have a heart attack. I have healed some really bad places doing this. Hugs to you. |

Same thing happened to my mare. It was completely healed in 9 weeks or so. Make sure the joint capsule wasn't damaged though because that can lead to a nasty infection! Mine I just wrapped with a diaper (a larger one so it goes up higher but basically the same way you do for an abscess) and cleaned with iodine 2x a day. Mine never got proud flesh. |

That's where she was suppose to be headed but unfortunately they took a 15ft dive off into a creek bed and she broke her neck in the fall. She's still down there, coyotes should be eating well!

no, he should have been and I don't think it would have happened. she got locked up the night before to take her to the sale and the next morning she was gone. She had jumped the pipe gate, to cattle guards, and one fence. So he went out to bring her back in and she wouldn't drive, kept charging, jumped another fence, he didn't have the trailer so he didn't rope her because they were too far from the barn to drag back. So he went and got the gun to tranquilize her, the truck and trailer and someone to help. Well that darn cow wouldn't stop facing off with the truck so he got out to get around her and when he shot her she turned and came after him. unfortunately there was one place to go, and he didn't think she would follow him over but... she did. |

Location: Alberta | Wow that's scary, your hubby sounds like he was pretty lucky! Hopefully he has a quick recovery.
We had two separate horses have similar injuries to yours this summer. The first one we doctored for three weeks; cold hosed 2x a day, kept it wrapped and tried all kinds of different creams and finally we decided it wasn't going to heal without some kind of miracle so we took her to the vet and he cut a ton of dead flesh off, stitched what he could and casted it from just below the ankle joint and covered her whole hoof. After just under 4 weeks we got her cast removed and I was shocked with how it looked!! Almost completely healed. The 2nd horse hurt himself the day after we took her to the vet so we took him in too with in an hr of injuring himself and after 4 weeks it was completely healed with hair grown back!
I would really recommend checking into casting if you are able to keep her in a dry stall for the next couple weeks, I will never waste my time cold hosing and wrapping again if casting is an option!
1st pic is the day after it happened, 2nd is 3 weeks of cold hosing and the 3rd is right after we took the cast off.
