I have a horse with a severe case of KS. I have done injections and had some improvement but now I must make the decision of surgery. I had Shockwave therapy done this week and I would like to hear from anyone who has done Shockwave and what the results were.

Before my horse had kissing spine surgery, I did the injections also AND shock wave. It only helped for a few days. The injections actually helped more than the shock wave. Just get the surgery and get it over with.....he will be fixed for good!!

Wow, that is about the decision I had come too. Think I just had to hear it from someone who had traveled the same path. Thanks for the input.

I have not seen a whole lot of great results with shockwave for true kissing spine, have seen more success with injections. If your horse truly has a severe case of kissing spine and you have narrowed it down to be the cause of issues you are seeing (some horses show radiographic lesions of KS and it in fact doesnt necessarily bother them)... I would most definitely just go ahead and get the surgery done.  I've spent some time externing at Texas Equine Hospital with Dr. Honnas and he does alot of these surgeries, I highly recommend him.  He will also be very up front with you about what to expect and if he thinks the surgery is necessary. Good luck!

Just go ahead and do the surgery. Quit wasting time and money with anything else. I tried injections and systemic Tilden and wasted about 4000 in tests and other stuff. In the end surgery was the best option and now he is back running better than ever

We have just found out that one of our horses has KS. We injected him, but have only ran him twice since the injections and not sure if the injections didn't help or he is still anticipating hurting. My vet recommends a vet in Texas (probably the vet mentioned earlier) but couldn't estimate what the surgery would cost. For those of you that have had the surgery, could you ballpark what are we looking at money wise? How long is the recovery time? I know all horses are different, but just trying to get some idea.

I used Dr. Honnas at Texas Equine Hospital. A friend of mine use Dr. Dabreiner at Texas A&M. Both had great results. The cost depends on how many spaces have to be worked on. So anywhere from $3500-6000. Most insurance will cover the surgery though and mine even covered rehab costs (swimming etc). I will emphasize the MOST IMPORTANT part of the surgery is the rehab. Follow your vets orders EXACTLY. The horse has to be walked everyday etc in order for the back to heal properly and make sure that scar tissue and calcium deposits do not form in the healing process if the horse just stands in his stall 24/7. My horse was off for about 4 months and came back feeling great.

Dr honnas is the best from what I've heard & research I've done. I injections keep my horse sound w/his KS. I also changed saddles, bought the best CSI pad there was & I use a BOT liner under the pad. KS is manageable & fixable. I won't do surgery till injections don't work but my horse doesn't have a severe case either.

Thanks everybody! What is Mesotherapy?

A friend of mine did this on hers and had luck. It reminds me of acupuncture in a way but it is a combination of meds that's injected through tiny little needles. The meds disperse over a few days. One is an anti-inflammatory but I don't know how much help it would be if you're past the maintaining through exercise phase of KS
