but, offense TAKEN. worry about yourself and what works for you, not what works for everyone else. You said it yourself that accidents happen. So why are you surprised when you see videos of just that, accidents happening?
We ALL enjoy the love of barrel racing and as soon as we are done tearing each other down and start building each other up, the sport will be fun again.
best of luck to you. |

| Did you know that unless you have a green horse that needs help all the way around the barrel, that it's USUALLY better to hold the horn going around the barrel so that you can push your butt down in the saddle, and then will be holding the horn already and can pull against it to help you stay with your horse? Funny that most of the CHAMPION and NFR barrel racers I know of all grab their horn.
I know on my finished horses I get much better turns if I remember to grab my horn. |

Agreed.......
To the OP.........Generalities about ANY subject is just that....to "lump" every one into the same category (drunks, bad riders, etc) is asinine.....you are NO better than those who start rumors! |

Aside from that, I suppose those of us lacking the perfect balance of our youths should just quit? Boo! |

| I have such perfect balance I don't even need to ride!! I just play barrel racing video games and I am a pro barrel racer. I expect to win everytime I get on my horse on the computer or my real one. |

| By your rant you have disrespected every NFR, futurity trainer out there by saying they have bad horsemanship cause they grab the horn.
Your rant is very sad, as it says a lot about you in a negative way |

All the great barrels racers I know and the ones that just do it for the fun of it all use the horn at times during their runs its there for a reason its a tool that we need, its not just for hanging on but its to help make your runs better. Yept I agree to much time on your hands, I dont worry about what others do I just go my marry way and do my own thing. And horsemanship is all about knowing how to ride and useing that horn. |

| Β Honestly, the times I actually made good turns were when I quit messing around and just grabbed the horn. People in equitation based disciplines have been picking on us for that reason for ages. The fact that the horn helps keep horse and rider happy is something they can't comprehend. The last thing we need is our own ripping other people appart for using a an effective strategy. The bashing from the people on our side of the fence gets old. In barrel racing the horn is there for a reason. You don't have to use it if it's not your preference or style, but don't trash a whole group of people (including those in the top 15). |

Ditto! I only know of one lady who rarely uses her horn, she is a top futurity trainer up here and it's the way she rides! |

I happen to be one who pops up more when I grab the horn. I "feel" I do better riding two handed thru the turn. In saying that, I also think we should be able to balance and sit whether grabbing the horn or not. My opinion, grain of salt. |

Location: Northeast SD | My rant would be people not grabbing onto their saddlehorns around the barrel! Even if you feel like you aren't off balance you are moving to try to keep in balance with your horse and that will throw them off... Grab onto the saddle horse and sit down will keep you with your horse... |

| I personally would love to never HAFT to sit and ride like Troy hustling one the whole way. He's always 3 strides ahead of one knowing what it is going to do before it gets there. |

Location: Cocoa, Florida | I was never taught to "hold" my horn for balance, I was taught to push myself back with the horn to sit straight up around my turns and not flop over the horses neck.
I can personally say I've rode my whole life and have still bounced a little here and there, but I do my best to stay in shape and do core exercises to keep myself strong and balanced.
I don't laugh or get mad at anyone just starting out we need to offer help rather then critique because everyone has to start somewhere! No one is a pro right away. |
