Elite Veteran Posts: 721 Location: The Great West	my husband was recently in a very serious accident, he doesn't have any brain or spinal cord damage but will be wheel chair bound for about 2 months. When he gets out of the hospital some of my family want him to go to basically a nursing home for that time (probably over an hour from our home). We haven't seen our kids in about a week now due to his hospital stay, and the two of us want him at home but it seems like we are the only ones that do. How do I handle the rest of the family or is this something I should consider?

Lot of questions to you need to ask yourself and your husband and answer them honostly. Ultimately, it is his and your decision and what you will be able to handle once it happens.

I Prefer a Beard Posts: 1944	I'm a Home Health Nurse so I care for a lot of people who have been injured once they get sent home. The biggest question I would want to know is how much Physical Therapy is your husband going to need. If he has a need for Physical Therapy I would at least consider a Rehab or Skilled Nursing facility even for a few weeks. Most of the patients I care for end up recovering faster if they go to a Rehab for a few weeks and get intense Physical Therapy. Usually after a few weeks they come home on Home Care and we provide nursing care and continued Physical Therapy in the Home. In my experience the intense Physical Therapy at a Rehab really helps most patients recover faster. Also consider how much care your husband is going to need and if you can physically handle providing his care. Caregivers can get burned out quickly if they have no help.

Veteran Posts: 234	I agree with the other nurse who has posted-please consider a rehab facility for a few weeks. They will teach him how to transfer safely from chair to bed and other techniques he will need. Also your home will need to be considered - any steps, stairs, do the shower and bath have hand rails many things will come into factor. You could probably use a few days to rest since you have children it is a stressful time for everyone not just the patient. I was in a wreck 2 years ago and broke my hip in a non operable place so was in a wheelchair for 3 months, even being a nurse rehab was helpful when I was the one actually in the wheelchair not the other way around. Good luck with whatever decision you make.
