Ok so after searching for the past year for my mares papers based on only stories, I finally found her breeders after coming across a picture of her on their website!

It is without a doubt her! They owned her sire and dam, kept her until she was 6, bred her twice, when they sold her in 2010 her papers were never transferred.

Their website, Twitter account, and Facebook page has not been updated since 2011. The number listed has been disconnected, I tried emailing them, I even contacted a horse rescue that is in the same town but they have never heard of them before.

Is there a way I can prove to AQHA that she is that horse? DNA testing? Would it be possible to get the papers transferred without them?

I don't know about getting the papers but did you try mailing them a letter. So many people have gone to cell phones now that the number you found is likely a landline.

ETA do you that both her parents were registered? That may be why your mare isn't?

I did send out a letter this morning! She is registered. Both parents are and the 2 foals she had are. They actually seem like they had a pretty large breeding program. 20 broodmares and 4 studs. They sold my mare when they were downsizing to 10 broodmares.

My neighbor had a similar problem a few years ago and said that because of the situation AQHA may bend some rules, and do a dna test to verify that the parents are her parents.

After this breeder sold her, my mare ended up in a bad situation and was rescued by a family I was able to find a few months ago. When they got her she was extremely underweight and fearful of humans. They only owned her for a year before selling her

And I know her registered name and bloodlines. I also know the breeders name, and the name of her 2 foals. But I do not have any paperwork on her including a bill of sale

You can call Aqha they can send a letter on your behalf if the people are still a member.

Otherwise you might be SOL

I have you thought to ask on here if anyone knows them?  I got a mare on trade with no papers, traced down the original owners (horse was still in their name) and contacted them and asked if they would be willing to do an affidavit for lost papers and a transfer. I was willing to pay for a DNA test to prove it was the horse.  They did the transfer and lost papers for me and I ended up with a reg. horse.

This makes me so mad i could SCREAM!!!!!! Why bother with papers if your NEVER gonna transfer them??? ( I am not talking about you) People insist on papers then they sell said horse a dozen and times and pass the papers around and sometimes even losing the papers...REALLY??? I sold a horse 3 years ago, i know he went through at least 5 different people before i bought him back, guess whos name he was in...yep MINE...i just bought an 8 yr old reg buckskin..nice set of papers, guy informs me he was only the 3rd owner to have him...he had a tranfer signed in his name,  dumb me did not look closely enough and when i get home..the papers are in the breeders name and the transfer is not worth nothing....So then i start scrambling trying to come up with an address to contact the breeder to get them to sign a transfer...It really does not cost THAT MUCH to have a horse PUT IN YOUR NAME, it also shows PROOF OF OWNERSHIP in case of theft..etc...

I totally agree! Her 2 foals were never transferred either :( which is a bummer I would have loved to see how they turned out. If anyone knows anything its Olsons Quarter Horses in Hawley MN. My mare is Lookin for Natives. Her 2009 colt is either Lookin for Rainbows or Way to Native (on all breed pedigree as both names but its the same horse? Must have changed it?) And then her other foal is a 2008 palomino Native Angel

Yes I emailed her 3 days ago and haven't heard back yet. I also found her personal fb account, sent her a message and friend request. I found some old ads on websites such as equine now but non are dated past 2011. Its like she dropped off the face of the earth .

One of the stories previous owners told was that one of her owners passed away and that was why she was sold but I searched for an obituary online and couldn't find one...so if that story is true im guessing that it would have been the person that purchased her from these breeders which would explain why she was rescued in 2012 for neglect

There is a very good chance that the horse was sold without papers. Also, some people do not want to spend the money to transfer. When I look at ads I check to see of the horse is registered in the seller's name. If not I move on to the next horse. If the horse was in a rescue at one time the papers could have been canceled.

She was not in a rescue, the family drove past the property and saw a few horses in bad shape, my mare was in the worse condition so they went up to the house and paid $100 for her. She was extremely emaciated and wouldn't let them get near her. They claim once the owners died the horses were given to the neighbor, which didnt have the money to care for them. Again this was a story I was told, along with many other stories.

What I dont understand is how non of her previous owners can remember anything. I could tell you where I bought a chicken from 8 years ago, yet they cant even remember what town they found and rescued a 1000 lb animal... and its not just that one family either. The woman I purchased her from was just as unhelpful and vague, they only had her for one year!

I would believe the breeder sold her with papers since she was listed as a broodmare along with several others

If she had a 2009 foal she is DNA'd. Contact AQHA. Tell them she was a rescue and were told the past owner, breeder died and she has reg. foals. They might help you.

I have seen breeders sell without papers- because they dont want responsibility for passing on a negative trait, just a thought.
I know you have a story and I am not saying anything bad about your horse but I have seen this happen.

Let me know what they say

As aqha denied me when I had the papers in hand a signed transfer of the executor of the estate, and a copy of the will notarized stating who was the executor.

I ended up selling a really nice mare without papers as aqha would not transfer them into my name.

I have a similar experience.
We purchased my mare in 2003 when I was 15 years old. My parents went through a nasty divorce and her papers were lost. I some how had the transfer.....not sure why they weren't with the papers. Anyways, here it is 11 years later and I've sent in a transfer and lost papers to AQHA. AQHA sent letters to the breeder and the person I bought the mare from. Breeder says his signature was forged on the transfer. I bought the horse from Victory Farms. I spoke to them once and they said they didn't keep sale records from that far back. During the same time I bought this mare I also bred my other mare to Bullys On Fire, I was hoping they could at least look that up and it showing that I WAS there. Since AQHA sent out a letter they will not reply to my emails or AQHA's letters. I have a mare with no papers and one foal on the ground. UGH
Any ideas?

Well aqha told me I would have to track down every single owner and transfer one by one. Which could take up to a year and would be almost impossible.

But I did get a hold of the breeder....hes older and these past few years lost control of his breeding program. So now has over 50 horses. Studs running with mares so most are grade now. He has her papers but since he still has them hes convinced he still owns her :/ yet couldnt even remember what horse I was even talking about. I also asked about her 2009 colt still registered in his name and he swears he never had a horse named that....I think he just cant remember selling them.

So im getting her dna tested to verify whether its her or not. If it is then ill just transfer from him straight to me.

I also have a local rescue helping him with his horses.

I think only if she is authorized by AQHA

You will have to go to court have the man deemed mentally incompetent, then a guardian will be appointed and aqha may not transfer.

I wouldn't push it too hard as he has more rights to the horse then you if he has the papers, he can say the horse was stolen, he never sold it, and you could be ordered to give the horse back. Especially as the previous owner cannot remember where she got the horse from and has been very vague.
