So I have a 5yr old gelding that is in the pasture 20-22 hrs out of the day. The rest he is in his stall for feeding. (My older mare gets lots more and he will eat hers too if I don't lock them up, plus our miniature donkey wll try to get in their feed.)
Until a couple of months ago he was a very level headed good boy, no issues, but lately here he is starting to be mean when feeding-time comes around. Like trying to charge at me, and when I corrected him on that he actually reared a bit and kicked out at me... Of course I made sure he knew I was not accepting that and he hasn't tried it again. At first I thought he was just adjusting from being low man on the totem-pole to top guy in the pasture.
But now he is starting to get cinchy. It started maybe a month or so ago, with turning his head to me when I was cinching up. (couple of holes at the time, my old mare was a b**** so I am always very careful) but last night I went to cinch him up the final holes while I was on him, and he turned around to bite my leg! He didn't really bite me, but I could feel his teeth on my leg... Not happening so I made him aware of that, but.... I do want to know why the attitude change....
He is still eating good (actually attacks his food like he is starving...), looks good, and other than feeding-time or saddle-time he is a good boy. He does respect me when I work him on the ground the rest of the time....
I know that when his sheath needs to be cleaned (and of course check for beans) he gets sore on his back, to where I run my nails over his back he flinches bad. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.... but thought I would throw that out there too.
Anyway, I will have him checked out by my vet, but I would like your input too.

Sorry for the book...

I am curious about this too.....this sounds exactly like my mare! I always just said it was a "mare" thing....lol. But, could be ulcers, even though she doesn't "look" like an ulcer horse. I just read the other ulcer post and a lot of people were saying horses still have ulcers even if they look good, eat good and act good. So....could be!! I am interested to see what people say about your boy!!

Have him checked for EPM. My gelding acted the same way grouchy in the stall, biting at me when saddleing, didn't like being brushed, bucked when trying to ride etc. treated for ulcers no change did injections no change then tested him for EPM and he had mild case. treated the epm and he is great now.

Well, that's the thing. He loves being brushed and mess with. No problems in the stall except for feeding time. And he is not mean, after the one time he just pins his ears and looks all mean.
And no buck at all, he still rides the same. But I will def mention it to the vet when I take him in.
Thanks!
