Swelling around stifle joint

Just got back from the vet today. My gelding has swelling around his stifle. He also needs some hoof work. The vet said to take him home, get his hooves worked on and shod then give him bute for about a week. If he still wasn't better then to bring him back and he'd inject it with steroids. Anyone had a similar situation? The vet did X-rays and there is nothing wrong with the stifle. He thinks maybe an old injury, when I bought him a month ago his leg was torn up from being caught in a fence. I'm wondering if maybe he torqued his stifle pulling his leg from the fence. Anyone think it'll get better without injections? Or should I just go ahead and make the appointment to have him injected after the farrier comes?

When my mare strained her stifle, I gave her rest, cold hosed 2x daily, and applied Neumatizen
(don't know if I spelled that right
). She was fine without injection.

I had a horse with stifle problems. Injections, chiro, massage, acuscope, nothing helped. Turned out the angle of his back hooves were off just a bit. I had a new horse in 1 farrier visit. I would certainly wait and get his feet taken care of first.

I would get his feet done. Make sure he is balanced.
