My good horse died recently uninsured, leaving me with a pretty nice 5 yo mare that needs finishing. She does NOT seem to suit/fit me, though my husband can make a2/3d run on her. He has given me permission to sell our living quarters horse trailer, taking $15,000 out of it to buy a new horse, hopefully one more suited to my style. We would then buy a plain jane aluminum trailer, no LQ. I'm 55 years old...I havent got many years left, I want to compete, not mess around trying to season out a horse I don't get along with. Yes, I could sell the horse (and probably will), but the horse trailer would sell quicker and easier, and get the amount of money I need. Would ya'll give up the trailer in order to be able to "go"?

I definitely would because I have done it before! Got a smaller trailer and it works just fine and I got a horse I can ride now and not have to wait to finish one.

I think you know the answer to your question, since you have it all figured out so you'll still beable to enjoy what you want to do

I know a lady who sold her horse trailer to buy her horse and the horse ended up winning her a new trailer....never know

Heck yes! Sounds like you don't NEED the trailer, Especially since you don't have a horse to compete on. What's the point in having a trailer liked that and NO HORSE? LOL

I agree with what the others said, so sell and buy that horse for you and smaller trailer.

What do you mean that you don't have many years left to compete. According to June Holman you have 16 years yet.

I would, but be sure to insure the new horse!!

Can your husband call my husband??  We're selling a car to use as a down payment on a LQ, but since my horse has been hurt it's been hard to not want to apply some of that money for another horse!!  My husband isn't one of those people that can be persuaded into putting money into a horse vs. something that can have a tangible value!! So... go ahead and have your husband talk some sense into him!

15k isn't much to spend on a good horse.

There is no guarantee that you will find a horse that suits your needs and your style.

Then you also have to work with the problems the horse has, such as maintenance

I would probably sit tight a year send the 5 yr old off to be finished by someone who rides like me, then ride that one. Then I know what I have

My husband is unusual in that respect...we waited a long time to even be able to have a LQ trailer...and I don't think trading something of tangible value for a horse is usually the best way to go, strictly looking at the investment part. But sometimes, it's not just about the "financial value" of something....sometimes it's the "perceived value". Every time I load that young horse up in that nice trailer, I think, what a waste. I guess I'm lucky he has given me this much latitude. And yes, new horse will be insured, if there is a new horse :)

As they say, its more important what backs out than what you pull up in. That being said, I too think it might be a good idea before I jumped just to see if a trainer might be able to fix the issues.

I totally agree... if I followed my heart on every decision I made I'd be broke, broke, broke!!  I just hate buying a trailer and having to watch it sit for a few months until I go overnight... but I know my gelding will be back and I'll want to haul, haul, haul!  Best of luck to you!  Maybe you can find a trainer and get him/her to iron our whatever issues you might be having... but sounds like a nice 5 year old to be running in the 2/3D already with your husband!

NOPE..Today you could buy a rather cheap good looking broke horse and be ready before spring to go out and run. I would say you already know how to put one together.
