I have a friend who wants to breed my mare to a stud of his choice and "sponsor" the foal for my daughter to run when the foal is old enough

This is an area I have never dealt with. Any advice on what I need to do to protect both parties interest?

I don't see this as being a very good idea.

Friendships can fall apart, your daughter may lose interest in horses/barrel racing, something may happen to the foal, the mare may not be able to get in foal, etc. etc. If you friend wants to sponsor your daughter, I would suggest a typical sponsorship.

I didn't think it was a good idea when I read it either.

 Waaay too many questions…

Who pays the stud fee?
Who “owns” the foal?
Who feeds, takes care of (for three years minimum) and trains?
If outside training, who pays?
What happens if it is a “dink” foal or foal dies?
What is the “reward” to your daughter if the horse is successful?
If sold, who gets the money?
Etc., etc, etc.................

I would think long and hard and have an attorney draw up an iron-clad contract….

Nope, things like this go south real fast, just pay the fee yourself or buy something thats really to be train and send it off to have a good start/foundation but on it.
