| I have a gelding who is super laid back, which I don't mind at all, but he seems to lose energy rather quickly? He's 6 years old and he's in shape currently. He just seems to become increasingly slower as the day goes on if we are out at a barrel race. Day to day riding is fine, but when we ride for longer than about 2 hours he gets lazy.
I'm looking for a feed/supplement that will help increase his energy, but not make him "hot." He currently gets fed Bermuda 2x a day, and he's also on pasture all day as well.
I've used Strategy in the past, and I wasn't very impressed by the results, but I would be open to trying it again. I've also used something called Healthy Coat? I think? And I didn't have the horse on it long enough to notice results before I sold him.
Any recommendations would be helpful, thank you :) |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | Ruling out health issues, I saw an increase in energy when I switched from Total Equine to Strategy. I had to switch back to TE for feet. I'm trying Purinas Super Sport with the TE as I heard great results from a friend using it-- energy, condition. I haven't had a chance to really compare for running yet but working him on a day to day I have seen an improvement in his energy levels.
Other ideas are Source or Kelp. Flax seed will help with stamina.
I tried Red Cell as last resort-- you have to be careful with adding iron. No improvement. I don't know if lixotinic would be any better. Also tried Finish Line ultra fire and no difference. Tried corn to, a little better but not much. |

If you are lacking energy all together, adding a source of simple carbohydrates in amounts that do not disrupt the digestive system could be the answer. This can be done with added concentrate feed at not more than two pounds per feeding. On the other hand, if you start out with the energy you want, but then run out, you need to increase stamina. This is better done with added fats as they are much more energy dense. Fats provide 2.25 times the energy of carbohydrates or proteins. In either case, you may benefit from adding some alfalfa to the diet. This slows the hind gut down so that your grass hay and pasture can be better digested and more of its energy captured. Check your horses teeth and make sure your worming program is up to date. |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | Check with your vet. Didn't read the whole post, or comments, but I had to do B12 injections for a few months with my boy... After that... WHEW! He was kickin!!
He had a vitamin definciency and doc prescribed B12 for energy. Works best as an injection but there are pasts and liquids. |

| EQ Royal is really good
I have 3 friends that run on it and I can see a difference from before to after in the way the horses are running and clocking
I have another friend who using Winstrol on her gelding and its been a huge difference for him - went from 2D to top of the 1D - 1 shot a month |

2 hours of riding is a lot if they are not used to it. When you are at a race do you keep hay in front of him when you are not riding?? If you aren't I think that would be a great place to start. For added energy and zip in your giddyup I like adding alfalfa to their diet.
