So my daughter is 15 and is pretty involved in photography. She has been shooting barrel races, rodeos and getting some work doing Sr pictures and even did engagement pictures today. When she puts them on facebook she water marks and lets people share them on social networks . Well last night a lady on instagram stole one off of her personal page and put it up saying it was hers and that she had taken it. So my daughter made up a new water mark just for fun today ! Everyone was getting a laugh out of her. She did tell the lady she was welcome to use the photo with proper credit or she would force her to remove. It was in fun and frustration, most people are actually very good about buying or giving credit .

Very nice picture,

But I do think the watermark is unprofessional since she is 15 yrs old I would not be supporting this behaviour as you could be telling your daughter it is okay to threaten to beat people.

I would think it could be considered as uttering threats.

What if she actually does assault someone?

She is not actually using this she was just playing around with it and I would never allow her to put it on an actual picture for her photography page. She uses a nice water mark on her pictures. She is the sweetest kid and would never assault anyone.

a.) I think this was funny b) photography theft is VERY common and c) political correctness is run amok, I am sure your daughter was tongue-in-cheek. A story...I am friends on FB with a well-known barrel racer who shall go unnamed...one day last year she posted a picture with PROOF written on it, taken at a WPRA rodeo. The photographer saw it, and posted," nice picture, (her name)...hope you plan on buying it!" Lordy, I was embarrassed FOR her!

Love it! I have felt like this many times! lol. I put my name across all of my pictures when I do shows, and if they buy a CD or anything then I remove it. You would not believe the people who want to get crappy about my name being on the pictures before they buy them. Im not stupid! lol.

I still follow your daughters page and love her work! She is doing really well with her photography!!

One of my pet peeves is people posting on social media their event pictures with a watermark through them.  If you like your picture THAT MUCH, why do you want it skewed with a watermark.???  Not to mention it's stealing.!  These photographers don't come to the events just because they want to pass time, it's their job.  Within the last few weeks the event photographer that shoots the majority of horse and livestock shows in our state changed his watermark to say "STOLEN FROM ......".   I love it.!!

Your pictures are very nice as well . It is funny how people will be and don't realize the time it takes t not only be there shooting an event but the time it takes to edit .

Take a Picture

First of all that is not a watermark. Second, photographers use a LOGO that they usually copyright but not always. The third issue here is that if anyone puts up pictures on a public domain such as facebook or barrel horse world (ones that you have taken yourself) they become public domain and you can only ask someone not to use your pictures. I took some pictures of a horse for an ad. I was paid for the pictures. A person bought the horse and removed my LOGO and posted them on BHW as pictures that she had taken. This is someone who is on barrel horse world all the time. That is also more than a little illegal. I have had many people use my pictures for ads and have never minded because they BOUGHT the picture and I felt that it was actually pretty good advertisement.

Text and logos on pictures are one form of a watermark

The photographer owns the copyright from the instant they click the shutter. Putting pictures on FB or other social media sites does not mean they become public domain and are ok to copy. The copyright is still in effect.

Cutnrunqhmt your daughter has a great eye for pictures and does a wonderful job

Oh thanks she is pretty into it and has a lot of fun. She does have an actual watermark for her pictures as well . I always tell her if she puts them on facebook they will get shared and that is certainly fine . She had to move her water mark to center of picture just so people would leave it . A person can be fined up to $1500 for taking a copy right picture and Instagram is really good about having people take them down if they don't have permission to use.
