| We noticed our mare was riding a little rough in the back end on saturday so we flexed her a little and looked for soreness and found none but we chose not to run her, well on sunday she acted real sore when my daughter went to pick her front feet and she almost went down to her knees. We were standing around talking about it while getting our other horse ready and I noticed her holding her tail a little funny then she squealed and acted as though she wanted to kick our gelding.
So my question, is it normal for some mares to be this sore when in heat?
Suggestions and next step?
We have only owned one other mare and she had no issues like this so we have no idea if this is normal or not and yes ill be calling the vet in 30 minutes, but I like to know other options and opinions.

Im not saying dont call vet but just letting you know they can be that way yes.. |

Location: Florida.. | My mare would go down at times and act colicy. Id give her banamine for a day or 2 to get her thru the worst part.
my other mare was put on regumate but she had major issues when in season. |

Location: You never know where I will show up...... | Seems like a lot of mares have problems when they are transitional and that usually happens in the spring and fall. I'd suggest getting her ultrasounded, and see what's going on for sure. If she's got a large follicle a good repro vet will be able to give her a shot to make her either ovulate or regress it. She could be kept on Regumate or an injectable progesterone for a few weeks and by then she should be done cycling for the year (unless you are keeping her under lights or she's one of the few mares that will cycle year round). You don't want to give them the progesterone unless you know for sure there's not a large follicle as it can cause them to hang onto that follicle. You want them to be rid of it before starting them on anything like that. |

The vet we called said he thought it was a behavior issue and nothing to do with her cycle...literally shaking my head while typing that |

Not really. I am in SD and I still have mares coming in. They are transitional so they are likely not ovulating, they are just building follicles and regressing which causes them to act like they are in. None of mine are under lights. If the weather is nice they will stay transitional longer. Once it gets cold it usually stops. I've had some mares that do actually cycle all winter long, too. |

| My mare is having the same issues. Sore in the loin area. Not using her butt and blowing out of her barrels.
This just started in the last month or so.
She acts studish at times and has horrible cycles.
We are putting her on regu-mate to see if it helps. |

Location: Texas | Was having the exact same soreness issues with my mare, not really any awful behavioral stuff, just really sore, not using backend. Been to several vets, all the typical stuff looks good (hocks, stifles...). The only thing that helped was the hormone implant, and it stopped helping as much. Had her ovaries removed last week and can't wait to see if it helps her be more comfortable. |

there is a vet here in texas, in the san marcos area, she will adjust a horse via the rectum....
I know sounds far out there, BUT, there have been horses that went to her with chiro issues and she went in and the reproductive organs were "twisted" "out of place".....
believe its called the whole horse clinic dr luann groves
food for thought, think outside the box.....
BTW, I have a mare, and have not had any issues w her during her time of the month, but I have heard of mares that u are unable to ride them bc they are so sore during their cycle.... |
