Seeing the MSU thread got me to wondering. Which college has the best horse for sale, which have the best deals, etc. Any thoughts?

Did some googling.....Missouri only has 7hrs left on their auction.

Most of them do a very poor job at selling the horses.  Utah State Univeristy has an online auction each year, that usually includes some of the hot barrel lines.  2 years ago I was bidding on a DTF filly and couldn't tell if I was winning the bidding or not.  They didn't have a set stop time, it ended at 12:31 am while there was still active bidding.  My opinion is that schools should educate, not try and sell horses.  Send the horses to one of the many sales that exist and stay out of the way.

I don't even want to get started on the quality of horses I have been seeing at some of these schools.  We have plenty of back yard breeders, we dont need  schools each turning out another 30 head of "backyard" stock.

I got a super nice one out of a school program, but it was a private sale.

IMO - Hands down the best horse sale - Colorado State University

Classy, well managed, good prices and they usually have a guest consignor. It is a ranch horse, working horse sale - not barrels, but a very well done University sale.

Huge ditto!  You can Google 'legends of ranching' to give you some idea of consignments and the ranches

Whiteboy is right, universities usually do awful at selling horses. I know MSU has had a bad reputation of selling cheap lessor quality horses. This is mainly because the university is so research driven. Quality of horse is not a concern when several large research projects are in the works. A lot of repro research is done at MSU. Many of the foals in the sale this year came off a feeding trial to see how certain supplements affect the immune system. With these kinds of projects, a university must find a way to utilize and turn over these horses. This is how student teaching comes into play. Please keep in mind that all these horses are used in many different ways to teach undergraduate students about the equine industry as well as give vet school students hands on experience. I'm sure many of you that own nice horses do not want an unpracticed vet student working on your horse right???? Or you dont want to hire a barn manager that has hardly worked with a horse.

Another thing to keep in mind; these 'backyard breeder universities' are turning out fully vaccinated, healthy horses. I haven't seen too many backyard breeders that do that.

Greetings from Susquehanna, PA

I missed Penn State Equine Science Showcase and Quarter Horse Sale this year. Are there any upcoming university horse sales? I know that The University of Findlay hosted one last year too.

University of Montana in Bozeman does an incredible job with their horse sale. They always have nicely bred horses and have a really organized sale. Now that Copper Springs has moved to New Mexico, I am not sure if things are going to change for them since the held their event at the CSR.

University of WI - River Falls does a decent job. I have seen some super nice horses come out of their program. They dont typically have the papers I am looking for so I have never seriously looked. They normally do a live auction, this year was online due to Covid but I didnt hear any complaints. I did think some were priced oftly high though.

Louisiana Tech had a quality race bred program back in the day. They even stood an Easy Jet son. It's a sad mess now.
