| The Good - The Bad ?? Any experience?
Sat in one of the barrel saddles at the saddle shop - the tree fit my horses BEAUTIFULLY but I know nothing about them. So - If you have some wisdom to impart - please let me know!
Thanks much!

Meh... Jeff Smith makes a pretty good saddle I guess, but it's almost like a straight copy of a Teskey's Saddle in my opinion. Same medocre quality, same tree, different name. They're a tad over priced for my liking but if you can find a deal on one they may be worth the money. They do move relatively well at the tack shop here. Lots of people like his Cutting and Roping saddles. Haven't heard much about barrel saddles....
I'm curious to know how other people feel about them as well. |

They look really nice, I'm hoping that I'll find a booth at one of the expos in Vegas this year so I can sit in it before I spend the money. I really like Jeff smith cutting saddles |

| I've looked at both the cutting and barrel saddles, but I've never gotten the opportunity to physically sit in one myself. I figure they must be halfway decent if Mary Walker is riding them... |

^^^ The ones in the link are super nice to sit in!! I really like them, they ride more like a cutter and are better quality than his "regular" line of barrel saddles. These are on the BW tree and they're cut out under the fenders (some of them anyways) and I think they sit a horse great. I did not care for his regular barrel saddles at all or the cowboy collection. They're nice enough cheaper end saddles but they did not fit any of my horses. the heavy oil one does |

| So I like his cutting saddles ... and the barrel saddle I sat in was cut out under the fenders and fit similar to the cutting saddle.
Thanks all for the info! I hadn't heard much (if anything really) about the barrel saddles. You all have been very helpful! |

Location: Arkansas | I have one that I bought last spring. I happened upon it at his booth at the horse sale in Shawnee. It is roughout and I love the way it rides. It has fit almost every horse that I put it on as well. I do think it sits a little more like a cutter probably. |

Location: North Dakota | I've sat in the cowboy collection and the Mary Walker and IMO hands down the Mary Walker saddle is much nicer, better built rig, but the price shows that as well. I've never sat in one like Herbie has.....The Mary walker is a lot like the sharon camarillo, should fit a lot of horses pretty easily. |

It rides just like a cutter with alot of front end and balanced. I bought a new cutter almost like this only double skirt and I loved the quality and the fact that there was no breaking in.....the only thing I didn't like was that the 15" seat was too big for me to keep to run barrels in, so when I sold my sorting horse, I sold the saddle too, because if I'm going to run barrels, I want to be in my 14" Caldwell....if I ever start sorting again, I'll go out and buy another Jeff Smith cutter....I thought it was a beautiful saddle and extremely well made and I did get mine from RS Saddlery....
p.s....like Herbie said, if you like a lot of front end and balance, you can see from her picture that this saddle has all that...there's absolutely no way you can get thrown forward in this saddle....so great to cut in or for a front endy barrel horse....

I have two Mary Walker's, but I cannot wait to see Jeff again to look at Tammy's saddle. He has told me all about it while he was in the process of building it, but I haven't got to see the finished product yet in real life.

What she means is that alot of barrel saddles aren't built with any height to the pommel (front end), and that when you stand up your feet go behind you. A cutting saddle is built with fenders that are hung just in front of your hip so that they ride balanced and when you stand up your feet don't swing toward your horses flank, which in turn throws your upper body forward and you end up kissing your horse between his ears. A cutting saddle you sit down in....many barrel saddles you sit on....if that makes any sense.
The higher pommel adds in keeping you down in your horse through the turn and for me, it keeps me in a better position to jockey from and stay balanced on my horses. |
