Location: Montana | What is a career/job that makes decent money and allows time for barrel racing and rodeo? I work for my folks, but they would like to retire in the next few years and the family business is not one I can run by myself (too much work involved for one person).
So I'm trying to find something that will make me the money that I can use to pursue my horse goals, but will also allow me time to do so. I'm sure there isn't a "perfect" job out there, but there has to be something that kind of fits the bill or is close. And if college is involved, I'm not against it. Thanks! |

Location: DUMPING CATS AND PIGS IN TEXAS :) | Nursing can work. I am fortunate enough to have a job that is flexible and works with me when I need to do something with the horses. As long as I do my work......
I was an ER nurse too for years and worked night shift and had every other weekend off, so that was good too. And, If I needed to haul horses for breeding, etc. I just did it in the morning when I got off. |

Location: North Dakota | I went to school for 8 years to become an optometrist. I now own my own clinic. If I want to block off my schedule and go do something, I have that freedom.

Thanks LRQHS. My cousin's wife just got her RN and she is having a hard time finding a job around here. Thanks R_Beau...my idea of jobs is kind of narrow, so sometimes others have more ideas.

| I am an in-house CPA for a wholesale company and I love the flexibility I have with my job. Of course, I cannot take off for weeks at a time, esp. in the spring and at the end of the year. But for the most part, if I want to go to a big show, they have no problem with it. Also, I have the capability to work from home or anywhere remotely, which is really handy when the weather gets bad. It is a comfortable living and my horses and I definitely do not want for anything. |

| Just curious, do your folks know you arent interested in taking over the family business? Maybe they are expecting you to take over the reins when they retire. |

kramerica: Yes and no to your question. They would like me to take it over but they know I can't do it by myself. I think they kind of hope that someone could take it over with me that would want to do it, but that someone hasn't come up yet.
Griz: If I could find a sugar daddy, I would! LOL. Have you been talking to LRQHS again???
Bowersk: I was thinking of accounting because there are quite a few jobs in my area for that, and the hours for the most part are pretty good. I'm just mostly wanting some ideas. :) |

Location: Oklahoma | Could you take over the family business and have other employees that help you out while you're gone? If it's just mindless paperwork and whatnot you need help with you should be able to have an assistant or full time employee doing those things that don't require supervision.
I work for a family business (my husband runs it, but I'm not that in control of things) and it's fairly easy for me to take off to the vet as long as it's not the first of the month or the first couple days of the first of the week I have to do payroll..... so all in all there are about 7-8 days that I just absolutley cannot miss without trying to make other arrangements. 2-3 day shows aren't that big of a deal.. and it helps that I just work till 12 on Friday, so if I just work thru my lunches all week I don't feel bad about not working on Fridays! This job is part of the reason why I got back into running barrels. I make enough money to comfortably do jackpots and some bigger open shows, but not enough to take off and try to make a run for the NFR. I could probably make more money if I put my degree to use and worked somewhere else, but the flexibility means more to me right now. |

It is a car dealership and we run it ourselves without employees. My dad and I mostly do all the work now (whether physical labor or paperwork) and my mom keeps books. I know the business inside and out, but even moving a car across town to a shop or something takes 2 people.

Location: Texas | No to accounting. That's what I originally wanted to do and if you want to make any real money you will be working your a$$ off. And during tax season forget about your horses. You will have the money to hire someone to take care of them but kind of defeats the purpose. I say go into Marketing, that's what i'm doing and I have yet to find a negative thing about it. Simple 4 year degree, crazy good salaries, and flexible schedules. Plus super useful if you ever want a horse business. |

There Could Be Aliens Out There

Location: North Central Kansas | I can provide a lot of information on accounting if you are interested. I'm graduating in December with my bachelors degree in accounting and the job market is plentiful. I was accepted for 15 out of 16 on campus interview with a 3.5 GPA and no extracurricular activities or internship and no networking prior to attending Meet the Firms earlier in the semester. I ended up accepting 11 of the on campus interviews and got 5 office interview (one which I declined) and got 3 job offers. As far as accounting goes it is not all about tax there is also audit, advisory, and consulting. I took a job with a Big 4 firm (Big 4 is not for everyone). Yes, I will be working 50-80 hours during busy season, but I also get 25 days PTO and 10 paid holidays and can take sabbaticals at 20% pay. At Big 4 I know how quickly I will move up and will be making 6 figures before I'm 30. However, smaller local CPA firms are more flexible. I interviewed with a top 100 CPA firm and they offer telecommuting and condensed work weeks where say you work extra hours monday-thursday and don't work fridays.
I'm not trying to bash other business majors, but all of my accounting friends had no problems finding a job some went to Big 4, others regional and local firms, some to industry (which is a typical 40 hour work week), I even know someone who accepted an offer to work at a Coop. I have friends the college of business in other majors who are struggling to attain a job. My advice is to talk to as many people as possible to gain a good understanding of different career paths.
If you have questions about accounting, shoot me an e-mail. |
