I don't use Keurig machines but know many friends who do... Definitely gives you something to think about if you use one.

Read that a few months ago.  Still use my keurig daily.  I don't get grossed out easily.

Exactly! One of the things that bothers me to is the waste of the plastic cups they use that aren't recyclable... just think of all the millions used per year in landfills

Great article - thanks for sharing that!  I don't use a Keurig at home, but I do use the one at work --- well, not anymore!  LOL

I'm sure if you looked in a regular coffee maker at the office you'd have the same gunk...

just use the reusable cup, I bought the ekobrew stainless steel, saves money. I also run vinegar through ours once a week. I'm sure the water coming out of our well has more nastiness than my keurig. Plus, i'm sure I've eaten and drank worse things than what comes out of the keurig.

I like mine and I clean mine.  I also use the ground coffee in the basket - so not many plastic empty cups going to the trash for us.

My husband has one.  I clean it regularly and buy him organic whole beans that he grinds and uses with the reusable cup- no waste.

Love mine.

I have the "bunn" Brand. You can use ground coffee if you like.

They also make "k-cups" that don't have the plastic cup. The coffee is in a filter-like sack with a plastic part instead of aluminum foil.

As for the mold, mold is everywhere. I'm pretty sure I inhale/ingest worse microbes brushing my horse or cleaning a stall. ;-)

I would question the scientific veracity of any article from "eatlocalgrown.com".....

PS, I would bet significant body parts that they validated the safety and cleanliness of these machines throughly before they EVER hit store shelves. There are many companies that do nothing but validate machinery or methods for the food industry. Food companies do not take any risks in our overly litigious society!

like

however, if you are fanatically worried about your machine.....just put 5-6 drops of food grade peroxide in when you fill every once in a while.......

truth

just clean it. It's not a huge deal to run vinegar or food grade H2O2 through it.

PS, working in food method or machine validation is liable to make the world's happiest person borderline suicidal. LOL

That is cool, I didn't know it was possible to use reusable cups, very neat if you do use them.

you can get them TONS of places too - our local grocery store sells them, Amazon.com, etc .... :) We use the reusable/plastic ones at work in our keurig and just clean it with vinegar when we remember.

I also gotta say I'd wonder at the validity of an article from that website ...

Reusable cup is the wrong term, it is a basket that you can use your own coffee in.  Just rinse after every use and put it back in the machine.

I agree if you clean them and treat them like you should, they aren't going to kill you. You would be surprised of the make up, deoderant, lotion cooking pans that have ingredients that are much more harmful. It's everywhere. Most people cook with nonstick pans and those that have birds in the house aren't supposed to use those, it kills the parrots. Soooo think how great it is for us...
