Meet Aspendale Si's Gon Burden - Si for short. He is almost 9 months now - first solo hunt. After missing the first bird which he eventually got (we set birds for him, best way to teach in my opinion), he GOT IT, and I mean in a quick hurry. And it was FUN to watch. This is not the best picture but the only one I could get while trying to run a shotgun and the dog. The bird was about 15 yards in front of him but the wind was blowing about 25 mph this day and this was my chance for a photo. Anyway, I think he's going to make a bird dog. Still need to work on handing the birds to us but my husband has decided he might be worth keeping after all. Wanted to share with you both since you share a passion for good bird dogs. |

| Thanks. Wish I could have gotten him closer up to the bird but it was difficult to try and get photos when you are in training mode. He did great for his first solo trip. :) |

| My husband has been going pheasant hunting with a friend of ours. We actually have a few places with birds in Iowa this year! The first day out the group got 9 and then last weekend they got 4. Good pic of your pup! |

So does this mean you are getting your husband his very own bird dog for Christmas? I think next to barrel racing, watching these dogs work is my favorite hobby. :) |

TXBO I wish I could have gotten some other photos - never seen a dog hold like this one. Our other wirehair is a rock star but this one - INCHES forward when you give the okay - naturally. It is safe to say we were blown away by how well he holds. And I agree - the wind that day was awful and he figured this game out in a hurry - dang good nose. It was FUN! I wouldn't want him to get closer. Less chance of the birds flushing from pressure at longer distances. Just know that you may have to kick cover at longer distances. Also, if your other dog doesn't have the same type nose, teach him to honor.....if he doesn't do it naturally. |

Thank you - it is pretty country here. Some day though I would love to send my husband and dogs on a South Dakota bird hunting trip - that is his dream trip. |

No chance!! Lol! We already have 4 coyote hounds and 2 inside dogs. No room for anymore. If he got another one, I'd buy him a coon hound. Way more coons around here than birds! |

TxBO tell me about bird hunting in Texas. Doc, there are some great populations of bob whites in south TX and a few hot spots in west TX. Also some decent populations of scaled quail in south west TX. Hunting quality varies widely with rain fall. The most recent droughts have really been hard on the birds.
Biggest challenge is finding a place to hunt. TX is 98% private land. If you don't own land, you'll have to lease or pay for a day hunt. There is no knocking on a farmer's door and asking to hunt like when we were kids.
Dove hunting is good and can be found without spending a lot of money. Duck hunting can also be very good.
My last bird dog died last year. I haven't gotten another because of time and access to birds.
