I have a younger mare shes been ran a good year and occasionally this year. She has had her teeth floated, and been chiro'd on twice now. I have always thought her pattern was pain related but every time the vet has been out she's flexed sound and not shown soreness anywhere. I actually took time and had someone else lope her through the pattern so I could watch. Here's my findings:
1. When taken to the right first she shakes her head before her lead change going to second
2. She throws her head around second and is not rating up as much as usual
3. She turns third fine but switches to her right lead promptly leaving third
4. When taken left first she only tossed her head around it lead change was fine.
5. Second and third were great no unnecessary lead changes
6. After her work out for today I palpated joints and found the inside of her left hock down low had a good amount of heat compared to the other.
My vet is going to come out, watch her ride and evaluate her since she's shows sound when flexed. I am thinking left hock???

On a mare I would think about getting a caslicks done...not saying you are off the mark with the hocks but sometimes they will "act sore" and it is a "girlie thing". Cheap procedure and not going to hurt her. Good luck!
