Out of all my years with horses I'm actually planning on attending my first clinic in the spring. We have a Martha Josey one about an hour away, what should I expect? Do you all feel like it's worth the price tag? any advice or stories? I really wanted to attend one of her week long clinics but I'm a bit too far north for that!

I've done 4. It's basic and not very individualized. May be different for you depending on how many people attend. Personally I wouldn't do another one. All 4 I did taught the same thing every year. Not sure why I kept doing it after the 2nd one but I did. I started taking private lessons from a local trainer and learned more in 2 lessons with her than I did for the clinics. The clinics I did didn't have limit on how many people could attend and there was way to many every time. One of them had around 80 in it. The say you get individualized help but we didn't. when there's that many it's impossible. I wouldn't do another Team Josey. May would do one with Martha but not a Team Josey.

This may be a silly question...

"Team Josey" who might those people be?

I just went to the FALL CLINIC. It was amazing. I haven't been to one since about 1976 and a lot of things have changed. I had my horse injected about a month before. The horse does not have problems, I do. I wanted to eliminate anything that would hinder them in working with me. Be ready to ride all day and bring clothes suitable for all kinds of weather.

I went to one several years ago & Martha was there, however I have heard nowadays she isn't, of course she is getting up their in years. I don't think I would go to one now though. I learned alot from the one I went to, & my horse seemed to have learned equally as much if not more!!!

If I could live with them I could. I've been to that ranch more times than I can count. Pretty much your experience there is what you make it. If you walk up to Ty or Lisa or Gary (or anyone really) and ask them for personal help they won't let you down. Ty has always been the most helpful to me and and if you ask him questions personally he will help you through your problems through the whole clinic. They are awesome people, but I think the most important thing you learn is how to practice and the benefits of working your horse everyday.

I went back in the 90's with several friends. The young girl that went with us really learned alot. My friend I traveled there with had a bad experience. Me and the other girl had an ok experience. I have been to many clinics and that one seemed more geared to kids and beginners. You never learn nothing at a clinic, there is always something to learn, but I learned less at that clinic than at others.

I have been to 2. I plan on many more. I go because I need the saddle time with corrections on the pattern. Not the horse, me. It was a major confidence boost. Yes they teach the same thing every year but I bet you get better every time you go. I picked up on more the 2nd time than I did the 1st. You watch others and learn how to solve other issues. I go to the week clinic at the ranch. Love love love. A little childish? Maybe. But fun. Very fun.

If you're new or need to solve a problem, Ty Mitchell is the best. If your horse is finished & won't benefit from a lot of pattern work, it isn't worth it. I needed the help, not my horse, so I went. He pretty much told me what my hubby has been telling me. Lol. But I did enjoy it. A lot of saddle time but a lot of waiting time since there are quite a few riders there.

At the 2.5 day clinics you run on Friday & they video it. On Saturday you split into groups. One watches the videos & gets critiques from Lisa. One group is in the arena with Ty doing individual pattern work. The other is with Gary doing repetitive slow work. Sunday is pole bending & more slow work. Then you make your final run. It's a good time & worth it if you need the help & guidance. Great clinic for colts too.

What are you looking to get out of a clinic?  I went a few times and it probably wouldn't be my choice.  Too many people and too basic.  I think it's great for kids and anyone just getting into running barrels.  You can always learn something from anyone, but jmho there are clinics that you'll get more out of.  I remember spending a lot of time hanging out in line..... Having to sit thru a long explanation of asking your horse to slow down/whoa with body language BEFORE you pull on him, things that are important..but I'd put it at a beginner level.  (Pretty sure there was a discussion about leads...)

Exactly!
I love Ed Wright's clinics.  I'd like to go to one of Molly Powell's as well.  I'd spend some $$$ on dvd's and pick someone that I liked their style.

I agree Ed Wright is terrific... he usually keeps the clinics down to 20 people and gives each and everyone individual help all day long and each day.  I went to a MJ clinic years ago she was there and her husband.  I went for one problem with my horse.  Their answer to my problem was to ride my horse down.  I feel MJ clinic are for green horses or green riders, gets old playing fox and hound all day long around different obstacles.

Any clinic is what you make it. It is their responsibility to teach you and your responsibility to LEARN. If you pay attention to what the clinicians are teaching to each person you will learn from what they are told also. I noticed that most people in our group did not even go to the video critique. My first run was so bad that I almost had a panic attack before they showed it. Turned out that the video did not look half as bad as it felt and most others were way worse than mine. I would say that those people who did not take part in that really did not get a whole lot from the clinic.

I have a personal trainer and she suggested that I go to a Josey clinic because I could get plenty of saddle time.

I can also see where you would not get a lot out of the clinic if your horse was not totally broke, and I mean broke. Half of the horses there would not even move forward when asked.

I went to Josey Ranch this past summer for the week long school and it was fantastic. I love their team, and they are good with developing solutions for your horse. I am from Indiana, so we made the 18 hour haul down there and it was completely worth it. Me and the horse I took placed in the 4D in the finals, in the pouring down rain, and won a halter. We took off 2 seconds that week, and I started winning 2D when i got home. (I don't even have said horse anymore, but it was fun. haha)

ETA: I would not take a horse that wasn't BROKE, but they don't have to be running hard on the pattern. They are good with helping you move that next step to patterning one.

I went to one for my bday one year...was not worth the 450 buck it was in the early 2000s .....my horse was having problems not finishing his turns. There we're 30+ people there. I sat on my horse all day in 85+ degrees well they all got helped and had to wait till last all 3 days because my horse went left and they didn't want to move the cones. I got to make 3 runs with team josy helping the whole clinic and that was it.....oh ya the poles were set up in a patch of disked up sod that we trotted through 4 times .....
