Rode my mare yesterday and she felt great. Today I got her out and rode around at a walk and she felt fine. Asked her to trot and she went 3 legged lame on the back left. I felt all over that leg/stifle and didn't feel any heat or swelling, cleaned out her hoof and all looked good. If you look really close you can maybe see her being a little off at a walk, but she's not holding that leg and even rests the other hind leg. We got a good rain last night, so I'm wondering if she slipped in the mud. Any other thoughts or ideas?

We'll stick some hoof testers on her to see if she responds. It didn't seem like it was that low. I asked her to lunge a circle around me to see if I could pinpoint it. She went straight from a trot to trying to lope without putting any weight in that leg. That's what confused me, that she appeared sound at a walk but is extremely lame at the trot/lope.

Edited to add - I didn't force her to move out. Once I saw how bad it was I took her straight back to her stall.

My first thought is abscess

My gelding fractured a splint bone and there was no swelling and he was sound at a walk - may need to xray to confirm its not something like that

An abscess should have heat, tho it could be so slight that you might have to wet the hoof and wait to see if dries unevenly... A bruise would not have heat but could still cause lameness...

Sounds exactly like what my gelding did about a month ago...I swore he did something to his stifle or his hip as lame as he was at the trot. At the walk he looked sound until he tried to pivot. Had the shoer come down to test him just in case before I called out the vet or threw him in the trailer to take down with CC to UC Davis. One poke of the hoof testers on his outside heel on the left hind and he about came out of his skin. Tested the right also just because he is a Diva Ba$tard anyway and figured he might just be that big of a sissy. Not a flinch. Went back to the left again and wanted his foot back right then!!!! I poultice him for a few days and put the boots on him as he was due the next weekend for shoes. When the farrier came out again he found were Tucker had blown out under the shoe. Clean it out, filled it with Tomorrow mastitis medicine and he packed it with some hoof packing material when he reshod him. Been sound ever since.

I had a horse go suddenly lame and ended up having torn his deep digital flexor tendon... your best bet is to call the vet.
