I would love to hear the good, the bad and the ugly about riding in a treeless saddle.

I am really considering purchasing one for my mare as she is really hard to fit. The three saddles I am considering are:

Circle y Tammy Fischer
Bob Marshall
Just B Natural Treeless by Circle Y

If you use any of these saddles could you please tell me your options? I am really leaning more towards the Tammy Fischer and the Just B Natural. The Just B Natural I really like because it looks like a regular saddle. Also what saddle pads do you use? Back cinch? Also how does seat size compare to a treed saddle.

I absolutely LOVE the Double J's but Im so afraid ill be spending more time trying to find one to fit her and Im not an expert on saddle fit.

Thank you!

I have a older Bob Marshall and love it for just riding in but find it to bendy too make barrel runs in. And I have the Jackie Jatzlau treeless which I love love love!!! Holds you in place when you make a run and comfortable to ride in all day.... I use a back cinch on the Bob but so far don't find I need one on the Jackie... I use different pads through out the year depending how fat my horses are.... I do find the Bob can roll on a round horse when mounting but have never had a problem with the Jackie. Hope that helps

I have the Circle Y JBN. I LOVE it. I've heard a few horror stories on them. I agree with the physical appearance. I wanted a saddle that looked like a saddle. It has a nice, deep seat. Very secure. Stirrups seem very forward strung. But some like them that way. I use a back cinch on mine. I ordered a 14.5, somehow ended up with a 14. But it fits me. The only couple things I want to mention, 1. If your horse isn't slender in the withers, try to get the wider set up. My mare is by no means wide, but the regular "tree" is a tad narrow still and causes the saddle to want to move foward if I use my nice pad. So I've had to resort to an old, thin Charmayne James pad. 2. Mine took over 4 months to get. They build certain sizes as they get ordered. So it was quite the wait. Other than that, I am happy with the saddle. Not highest quality of leather, but a nice saddle overall.

They don't make a 14, unless it's a custom order... they make 13.5, 14.5, 15.5, etc. Get a half size up. The 14.5 I had fit like a 14.

I was one of the horror stories that bought one that was made crooked. There was a number of them made this way, and I hope they have since corrected the problem. From what I've heard, I certainly wasn't the only one, but the new ones coming off the line are okay.

I used mine with a saddleright pad. It did not have the best leather but not the worst either. I ended up returning mine after a nasty back and forth with Circle Y and the shop I bought it from (they wanted me to wait 6 months for a new one to be built... NO WAY).

I like the Original Bob Marshalls, I rode in one once. I don't think I would run in one as I felt trapped in the JBN and the BM as well, but the BM's are comfortable and good quality.

Any chiro or massage therapist I know is against them. Your pelvic bones are driving down into your horse's back and there's no tree to disburse the pressure. I know a lot of people love them, but they can cause back problems.

Have had the JBN and currently use a Tammy Fisher.......they are both very nice.  I do like the Fisher better........can get with my horse a little better coming out of the barrels.........horse is running harder in the Fisher and no longer hitting barrels.  I have the wide tree......and no soreness problems with 2 different horses.  They take a while to break in, so you prob won't like them much for about 20 days! haha....then you will love them

I could be mistaken as I don't have the tag anymore. I never personally measured it. It may have been that I ordered a 15 and they sent a 14.5. Either way, it wasn't the size I had ordered, and nobody called/emailed or anything to explain to me why I was not receiving the ordered size, nor was I told anything upon ordering about the half sizes. My mistake. However now I will probably have to go measure it. LOL. Luckily, mine isn't crooked.

I was very unlucky with mine, bingo. LOL

But I remember the size thing. I liked mine when I had it but couldn't figure out why I was leaning...till hubs measured it. One side was like 1/2" longer in the seat... the cantle was 1.5"+ taller on one side than the other.

But then again, I love my crown C, which is a totally different feel and sits me more "up". I felt a little trapped during a run in my JBN

I will say my chiro was not fond of treeless or flex tree saddles, but I know many who ride in them with no issues. I would love to get one for trail riding.  Mine did not appear to be sore from the treeless when I had it, but I only had it for about a month before I realized there was an issue.

Honestly, I would spend the same amount of money or less, and get a custom made one built. I had a terrible time fitting Chance until he won an R Bar B saddle and we could get him measured & fitted exactly. That saddle has fit him like a glove from day 1, though it has allowed the muscle on both sides of his withers to come back and I've had to go to a thinner pad.
Matt loves his Bob Marshalls and I like the 14.5 inch one on my Joker but he runs pretty free to the first barrel and when he can feel me sit, he rates a little better. I'm afraid it would be a bad combination on my super turny horses like Chance & Cliff because there is no tree to "hide" when I sit too soon! I think the treeless is a good answer on some horses but I personally prefer my treed saddles so I'm not feeling quite so trapped during a run. I will say that after making a few runs in Matt's Bobs, I can get up out of them a little better on Joker, but still I can't get to the front of the saddle and really send one across the pen like I can in a treed saddle.

IMO, I would take Will to R Bar B at Topeka and get Russ to fit her. I'd be absolutely shocked if he couldn't get you a custom made one for less than the price of a used treeless. Anytime I have trouble with a saddle fitting, I take the horse to Russ and we throw saddles on until we find the best fit. He's got hundreds of saddles to choose from, including some of the Tammy Fischer saddles so you could even try one of those on for size & fit.

Or saddles to fit? I LOVE double j's but I am so afarid to spend that kind of $$ if I'm spending months and loads of $$ trying to find one to fit her.

She is very thin in the withers right now and has that dip behind her shoulders because lack of riding so this is the worst time to fit her.

I Love my JBN!  I use a 5 star under it and a felt cinch.  I've never had any problems with it slipping, except one time when I forgot to tighten my cinch.  Luckily it was during warm ups and I didn't fall off.  I could get my arm and hand under the cinch...LOL  It was steady until I came around the barrels!

When I got my treeless (a Bob Marshall) I was usually one of the only girls at a rodeo with one.  Slowly I started seeing a couple more.  This weekend the association I run had our finals.  Of the top 15 girls, I counted 5 or 6 treeless saddles including BM, Circle Y Tammy/Jackie, and JBN.  At a regular season rodeo there are a few of us in each perf.  I think that says a lot!
I love my BM but I really want a Circle Y Tammy.  Want lol, not need.  There s nothing wrong with my BM so I'll just keep riding it for now.  I use a Saddleright pad under mine and a Ventech girth, although as soon as I have extra funds I'm ordering a fleece.  I bought a back girth for mine just bc I feel more secure.

If Russ doesn't have one in stock that fits both of you, he can get one custom made. We put a couple different trees on Chance, then he determined that we needed to raise the gullet a little more and slide the rigging as far forward as possible to get the perfect fit. It came out perfectly. I also had all kinds of options for designing it, though I kept things basic so I didn't have to throw in cash on top of what the NBHA district was paying. Mine has just a basic basket stamp and kinda plain conchos, but it fits and that's what really matters.
I would imagine that most companies could custom made one - I think Triple Creek will even send you forms to put on your horse. Personally I would want to see the tree on the horse and feel under it plus hear the explanation of what adjustments need made but that is just me.
When I got Chance's trophy saddle, I traded his old Frontier to Russ for the Circle Y I use on Clifford. We couldn't beat the fit of the Circle Y even with a custom made one so I lucked out there. It sure was nice to trade straight across and get a perfect fit on him too.

I AGREE 100% with this ^^^^^

Go spend the time with Russ. You won't be disappointed. He has MANY trees in stock, can build custom to fit your horses, and is incredibly knowledgeable. It was the best decision and time spent to go learn from him.

I was just there yesterday (for other things) and they have several treeless saddles you can try out too. Mind you there's a round pen and a full arena to try the saddle in as well during the appointment.

I know it requires an appointment and he is currently in Vegas repping at a saddle booth ... I think Circle Y pays him to be there. Anyway, there are no obligations to buy and he is very willing to answer all your questions!

Good Luck!!!!

I had a TF … other than my ego, it worked great for me and my horse, except, I lost weight and felt like I couldn't get up out of my saddle. Then I tried a JBN … Hurt my back. FIrst they sent me the wrong size. Saddle was mismarked. I ordered a 14.5 but a 15.5 was delivered. Lady at Circle Y was pretty rude but whatever, she might have been having a bad day … I eventually got my 14.5 … It worked pretty well at first, until my back issues started. Sold it … took a loss on it even though I had only ridden it about 50 times. I also tried a Tod Sloan … loved that saddle (belonged to my niece) and eventually it hurt my back. Found a used sibley … what I'm using now .. really like it but my back still hurts. May have to go back to a TF or maybe a Jackie.

Fallon Taylor (like her or not) is riding a TF at the NFR … seems to be working for her.

You should talk with Felicia Carleton in TN … she can answer all kinds of questions about saddles. SHe advertises here or you can look her up on Face Book.

It's too bad he is in Vegas right now because otherwise you could come to the NFR pattern jackpot Sunday at the Expocentre and stop at R Bar B on your way there or your way home.....I am all about piggybacking trips even with the price of fuel not being completely outrageous right now. Plus then I could be your cheerleader and keep you relaxed before your run. lol. :)

I have a TF and I use a CSI pad, with a thick 100% wool pad over that.  I do not feel my horse's back movement at all and my saddle does not move or slide and I do not have to cinch up really tight.

Willow55 - 2014-12-07 12:56 PM I would love to hear the good, the bad and the ugly about riding in a treeless saddle. I am really considering purchasing one for my mare as she is really hard to fit. The three saddles I am considering are: Circle y Tammy Fischer Bob Marshall Just B Natural Treeless by Circle Y If you use any of these saddles could you please tell me your options? I am really leaning more towards the Tammy Fischer and the Just B Natural. The Just B Natural I really like because it looks like a regular saddle. Also what saddle pads do you use? Back cinch? Also how does seat size compare to a treed saddle. I absolutely LOVE the Double J's but Im so afraid ill be spending more time trying to find one to fit her and Im not an expert on saddle fit. Thank you!

He's got hundreds of saddles to choose from, including some of the Tammy Fischer saddles so you could even try one of those on for size & fit.

that would work out great and I wanna run so bad but I don't have a saddle to compete in anyway! Lol I am also getting ready here soon to start a new job (just going through the long process) and I will be able to afford one then. So that's why I'm doing research now. But is r bar b a tack shop or saddle shop like where they build saddles. Also when are they open. Weekends?

Anyone ride a double j? Would they fit a thiner withered horse like mine? I'm assuming crown c's are out of the question.... 8in gullet yikes! That would fit our Arabians lol
