| Am starting to break her and she seems to have LOADS of cow in her!! What a good minded little girl. If she is an example of the kind of horse that KMC Sunshine's stud, The Mighty Mindbender puts on the ground, I wouldn't hesitate breeding a mare to him.
Faith is 3 coming 4 and I have only put a few rides on her over the summer. Started by getting on her bareback and just sitting on her. The first time we put a full sized saddle on her, I also ponied her for the first time. Two laps around the arena and I had a small friend climb up on her (the first time someone had mounted her from the ground and she took it like she had been doing it for years!), and I ponied them around the arena for a little bit then switched places with my friend. After a few laps, I had her turn me loose which is really saying how much I trusted this "little" filly because I have turned in to quite a big chicken when it comes to strange horses in my old age after a wreck 11 years ago.
Took her to a different indoor arena for the first time last night complete with a tarp covered boat, a bucking barrel in the corner and a pair of ropers practicing on a hot heels, which totally freaked out the mare I planned to pony her off of. It wasn't too long before Faith was tracking the hot heels, dragging said pony mare along! lol.
Combine that with the way Faith cuts my old mare in play, and I think I have a Cowhorse on my hands. Am hoping the quickness of her cowhorse bloodlines will translate into quick turns on the barrel pattern.
My goal when I agreed to bring Faith home, was to give this little filly a chance at a good life after she fought so had just to stay alive when she was first born. My hope was to get her sound enough for an occasional ride, so that if someday I could not feed her, someone else would be willing to. Now I have a beautiful mare who, if she stays sound, may yet make it to the arena to barrel race. Her biggest issue turned out not to be her hocks as I feared (after battling a clostridium infection as a newborn, she got a staph infection in her hocks as a baby, for those of you who do not know her story) but that her entire lumbar vertebrae section was twisted as a result of repeatedly falling from weakness and infection at such a young age. Regular chiropractic visits have done wonders for her. She went from not being able to trot (she would either walk or lope with her hind feet together like a rabbit) to moving easily through ALL gaits. This "little" girl is a fighter with a most wonder disposition. I am so grateful and blessed that KMC entrusted her into my care. She has helped to heal my heart.

We got sidetracked last year and part of this year but I got back on her in June and we have put our heads (and hearts) together and she finally learned how to sit and snap back on all of her turns and she is really rockin it. She put it all together at Waco in early November (and subsequently won almost a $1k and a buckle) and her confidence soared. Ran her at Marshall and sunday she sat squarely in the 2D and averaged in the 2D. 400+ runners each day and it was hard core tough. All of my horses just went on winter break until the end of February but I have a feeling Faith's momma is going to soar like an eagle next year and I bet she has passed that gene on to her kiddos. Oh, and she is a COMPETITOR. Through and through.
eta: sorry for the quality of the picture. It is a picture of the picture. Long story but suffice to say I am not a fan of price gauging and not being able to get a digital copy without getting ripped off.

Location: Riding Crackhead. | Congratulations! Sounds like you've got a great youngster on your hands. I've got a coming 3 yr old Bender baby that I've only done ground work on and spent tons of time with. She's the only one I have that will leave her feed to follow me around like a dog to get scratched. My filly is real stout. Maybe she'll still grow a little more, she's young. |

I was thinking the cow came from her momma! She does go back to Colonel Freckles twice on the bottom side.....
Congrats on your success with Mystic and may many more buckles on her come your way. |

Location: Blissfully happy Giants fan!!! | Lol, I would not call Mystic cowy. I am sure she could get after one but she has long legs and definitely looks the appendix bred. I go to practice ropings and while she isn't afraid of one and will go to sleep right next to the box, I think that is more Tia's doing on the ranch than her breeding. But she is catty. The more her confidence has soared the quicker she has gotten in a turn...and then she has the run to back it.
and thanks!! I love this story and I can't wait to see what Faith ends up doing!! |

Location: Bandera, TX | Wonderful news! My best to you on the "starting" process. I do believe Mighty Mind Benders could be started by those wanting to learn the process and they would be very successful.
My boy is turning 4 this coming year. I've had to put him on the back burner, I don't think its going to matter much. He's a work-a-holic, what ever I throw at him he's willing and ready to take on. As a late two year old we used him to pack a huge bull elk out several miles of tough terrain. He won me right there! I just asked him for the first time to sprint and boy oh boy did ever run his guts out. (Won't ask him to do that again for a long while.) I won't make it to the futurities on him in the early part of the year due to a commitment (not horse related) but I can't wait to see what he has to offer in the spring. He too, is ate up with cow and is tuff in the brush where the goats like to hold up. He made the best diving board for my nephews this past summer. Just a cool laid back colt. Thanks to his daddy.
Keep us updated on Faith's progress! |
