Had a friend with a horse who was just diagnosed with string halt. pretty much vet said, she can't be rode ever again or pay for surgery. what i want to know is there any other treatments or things she can do to improve it. she's only a 4d horse so she doesn't get ran "full speed" but its her only horse & first one that she has been learning on.

Can she be rode at all if there is no treatment? walk, trot, lope?

My older gelding had stringhalt several years ago and I decided against the surgery and went with what drug was popular at the time (can’t recall the name) and fed extra vitamin E, which was supposed to help.  My options were surgery, drugs, or just plain old time off.  After trying the drugs and vitamin E for several weeks and no changes, I kicked him out into the pasture and let time take over.  It took almost a year but he came completely out of it and you’d never know he’d had it.  Let him move so he got exercise and just let him be a horse and that’s what worked for him.  I rode him during that time after several months and just did casual riding, never hauled him anywhere during that time until he felt comfortable backing up.  All is great now.

I googled it and I see.  Oddly enough there was a horse that used to run at NBHA Open World with that.  I only remember because on the page I googled, they had a video.  I saw him several times in Augusta.  We were new to all this so it had to be like 2002 and 2003?  I asked the woman what it was and she did not give me the name stringhalt....she just said the horse had surgery and could run but walked funny.  Sure enough when the horse walked, it looked like the video I watched, back left leg would spring up and almost kick itself in the belly, but when she loped or ran, it didn't happen, he ran normal.  I have no idea what they did, but I thought that was interesting.

also when the vet came out he came her some pain meds, for 2 weeks and stall rest, was not to be let out unless to lead. and came back out 2 weeks later and said it was NOT pain related. she runs around in the pasture but sometimes when she bolts she almost falls, but once she starts running she is fine??

Some toxic weeds will also cause stringhalt and once removed the horse will recover with some time.
