Just curious... Do you put clips on your reins or loop them directly thru you bit?

Pros and cons of each way? Other than the obvious convenience of switching reins quickly...

Quite personally...I can't tell much difference in feel from one to the other. I don't have a trouble with a quick switch of reins with either kind, although once in a while I get the loop ones backwards or get something wrong, ha-ha. No, I'm not blonde, but I have to see how it goes together sometimes to get everything put the way it should be.

I do both. One horse is a nut and will FLIP OUT if you put reins over his head so he HAS to have at least one side that clips.

I use clips on my reins just because I like being able to switch them out easily.

I typically have one side directly attached and one side with a clip.

Most of my reins are loop through and if I ever do have clips on it's usually on a hack. I had a bad experience with a runaway horse when I was younger and the clips on the reins just broke off. Thankfully I was in a closed off arena but it shook me (and my parents) bad enough to try to never use clips if I don't have to.

I have one horse who detests snaps, this is due to the vibration the snaps make on the bit.

This mare increased my awareness and I have noticed most of my colts work better and are more responsive without snaps.

I am currently converting all bits/reins to snap less

I've got a mix, my bits with shanks mostly have clip on reins attached to them, same with my hackamores but I have big slobber straps and a nice macate set up on my snaffles because I love the feel and the weight and set up gives. For some reason I really don't like just a regular set of reins on a snaffle. With that in mind I've tried clips and no clips on different shanked bits and there's only a couple that I like better without clips.

Won 't use snaps anymore. I use a braided paranoid with a hole , button and slider so I can remove the rein.my racing tack is through the bit I don't want it to pop off.

I use snaps on mine and had never had an issue, but there have been some stories-reins coming unsnapped, snaps breaking etc.

Thanks, everyone!  I'll be trying my new reins snapless!  I bought a pair of 9 strand Gale Beebe's and when I asked the guy what size snap I would need he told me that a lot of girls get better responses out of their horses when they're snapless.  Never occurred to me!  Can't wait to try em out!

I don't use snaps on any bits. I've got a couple pairs of reins with snaps on them but those reins are only used on my hackamores.

I don't use snaps - good mare doesn't work well with the vibration on her bit.  I also ride enough colts or young horses that I just won't take the chance on something breaking.  I do like the quick change style of leather ends though ...

I don't like snaps.  By going directly to the bit you cut out the vibration that can occur, and get rid of one more piece of equipment that can fail.

I got in a serious mess when the quick change failed on my reins like this. Have you ever had an issue with them failing or coming loose?

I have snaps on some of my reins but not my Beebe reins. I like the feel of those without snaps. Hope you enjoy them!

nope.  I use 'em on my headstalls and reins.  I do like to keep 'em oiled and more clean (when compared to my other tack) because I have thought about that happening too.

I think with any tack it can and eventually will "fail" or break.  Staying vigilant in your pre-ride inspections can help reduce issues.

See now, I have to use snaps on my 9strand Beebe reins.  They won't fit through the holes on my goosetree!

Well, I guess that means I should probably go down and see if they will fit on my bit!  It's not a Goosetree, but I'm afraid now that they might be too wide for my Wasson.  I want to able to use them as soon as the ground dries up and do some walking around!

Anyone ride in a Wasson bit and go snapless?

That's true linds! I have my Beebe reins on a snaffle bit but when I used them on a Sherry Cervi bit I had to put snaps on them - they just don't fit. I forgot about that.
