Yesterday afternoon, there was a "Vegas Style" jackpot at Topeka, so I took the three stooges and got to somewhat have the NFR experience. The pattern was set the same size as this year's NFR though we didn't have thousands of screaming fans, a jumbotron, bulls in the alleyway or yellow walls. LOL. I didn't get rich by any means, but it was a good time.

Chance was 7th in the 1D thanks to a couple of stupid rider errors (leaning too much will sure stall them out leaving a barrel) -
http://youtu.be/5v_qhYhGxo8?t=20s A 14.268 won it so we still weren't far off the pace and I know I screwed up at the first and third barrels. :(

Clifford turned his first barrel after going down the fence both runs last weekend, and was 7th in the 2D (18th overall) -
http://youtu.be/-uePWlINZoU I really think he just needed some slow work to remember that he shouldn't just take off 40 mph from the gate and completely forget the 1st barrel. If I hadn't stepped him past the third an extra stride, we probably would have gotten some money. I figure I'll keep slow working him, holding him back to the first barrel and let him get more solid before we turn it completely loose. He had been doing really well this summer flying in there to the first barrel but apparently has found another gear. If I can stay on him at that speed, he could be really tough.

Joker got 4th in the 3D (32nd overall out of 80 runs) --
http://youtu.be/PFYKCZ8ChJ0 There's something about the ground at Topeka that he doesn't like so I generally don't enter him there, but he likes small pens so I thought what the heck. This way I could make my first run through the small pattern on old faithful and be more prepared for the other two.

It was a blast! I stepped out of my comfort zone and wore funky pants (I did try them out on Joker first to make sure I wouldn't slide out of the saddle LOL) to see if it brought me good luck like it did the newest world champion. LOL.
Thanks! I love my stooges though they all have some annoying quirks. :)

Thanks! I decided to have fun with the Vegas style jackpot and dress a little crazier than normal. Luckily neither pair of pants was slick so they did not affect my riding.

Yes he did! I was hoping more people would have fun but at least a handful did wear long sleeves and hats for a change.  I'm going to pull out some flashy (NOT Fallon flashy though LOL) outfits for the New Years rodeo series in KC because it's fun! My parents still can't believe I actually competed in those crazy pants but I have a couple ideas of how to tweak the turquoise ones to make them a little better for riding.....aka belt loops are necessary......my buckle actually hit me in the boobs running home on Chance & Cliff LOL.

Nice runs! That is so funny, because I thought to myself maybe I should start wearing some flashier clothes to barrel race. My luck would be instead of running great, I'd probably fall off in the bright colors, LOL.

Nice job, though! Will we be seeing you at the NFR some day???

I doubt that I'll ever have the financial backing to make an NFR run, even if I had a horse of that caliber. :(
But luckily I live in the Midwest and we have the URA rodeos which are super tough amatuers so I get to run against circuit finalists on a regular basis. Falling off is the reason I ran Joker first.....figured if I felt slippery on him I would have to put jeans on to run the other two. lol.

Behind the Scenes
Barrel Patterns by the Book
by Kathi & JimiBeth Myers

The rodeo arena at the Thomas & Mack is a small one, measuring 138' from the center alley gate to the roping boxes and 96' across. The WPRA Rule book's definition of a standard pattern for a barrel race is set for a much larger sized arena, but it isn't the smallest pattern permitted by the rules.

The Official Barrel Pattern Measurements for the National Finals Rodeo shows 60'5" between barrels one and two and 70 feet from the second barrel to the third. On the telecast it may seem like the horses have to turn the first barrel right after they come through the alley, so it might be no surprise that the score line is just 3½ feet off of the bucking chutes. The girls get a running start from the alley so they are at full speed when they cross the electric eyes.

There is 42'8" from the score line to the gate where the girls run out of the arena. This is shorter than the 60' in the WPRA rules for a standard barrel pattern, which is permissible because the alley can be included in the stopping distance required.
The Pro Rodeo Officials set the barrel pattern at the WNFR. They use rope that is tied to a stake to mark the spot for each of the three barrels and to mark the two spots where the electronic eye sets to measure the barrel times.

I think if you truly have the horse to get you there, you will find your way to Vegas, just sayin :)

Anyways, from past thread asking about joker looking sore, I'm still gonna say no on that. And I really love clifford, he seems like one cool dude! Nice runs

Thank you. I like being on the road, and so do Chance and Clifford, so if we could save up enough, I'd be willing to hit the rodeos hard. My goal is to buy my permit next year or in 2016 and see what we can do at that level. Chance is 12 and Cliff is 10 so I probably need to get on it before they're over the hill. Right now I have a big pen horse (Chance) and a little pen/crap ground horse in Cliff.

For whatever reason, Joker feels like a million bucks right now! When I pony him, he's the one in front of Chance pushing the pace which is a very refreshing change from feeling like we were dragging him along. It is very nice to actually work him instead of trot for 30 seconds, walk for a minute, trot for a minute, etc.

Clifford can be really cool or he can be a total thorn in my side LOL. What I hadn't posted on here was that he ran down the fence at the first barrel both runs last weekend. I spent Wednesday evening doing slow work in the pasture.....settling him in front of the pattern, walking a few steps, stopping again, etc., all the way to the first barrel. I slow worked him at the jackpot too, then held him up all the way to the first so we could keep his brain engaged. It made a huge difference, so I'll keep doing the slow work until he decides he can be consistent about turning the first. He has all the talent in the world if I can just tap into it. In the right hands, he probably could make an NFR run.

I know what you mean about the cost to get to the NFR, but Chance certainly has the speed!  And I think with a little more fine tuning, Clifford will too. :)  And I didn't think Joker looked sore, he looks comfortable at the speed he is running.

Chance would excel in the big pens like Pendleton but I don't know that he has enough quick speed to compete with the Stingrays and Lattes in Vegas. Who knows how much faster he'd run if 18,000 people were screaming and bulls were loaded on both sides of the alley though.....he loves that type of stuff.
Honestly I think Clifford has NFR talent. He did not start running barrels until December of his 8 year old year so this was his second full year running and he's still not a completely seasoned veteran. We won two rodeos this year so he proved he can compete, especially on nasty ground. He would have thrived on that round 3 ground in Vegas because he has no taste in ground LOL.
Joker is 21 and if he can still place in the 3D, I'll keep him in shape for at least parts of the year and run in the small pens. He loves running and truly thinks he is the baddest cat out there. Pretty neat for a $300 sale barn pony. :)

Looking good! Love the pants! And I love those $300 sale barn ponies. I won a boatload on two sale barn ponies when I was younger that put together didn't cost us over $1000. They paid for themselves many times over. Those kind don't come around often. Chance and Cliff look like so much fun to run!
