I know of someone that uses kitty litter in their gelding's stall. He pees in the exact same spot every time so it creates a mess. She has used it for years. |

Location: Northern CA | The bedding pellets or wood stove pellets are awesome for soaking up pee. My gelding pees in the same spot all the time, I just put a bag of pellets down and don't wet it, they soak it up, make it easy to clean, and 1 bag ($5) lasts 5 to 7 days. |

Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | The farrier told me to use powdered lime but I don't know where to get it so kitty litter was what I came up with. I look and the PDZ that I use has the same ingrediance that my cats litter has but the kitty litter smells good.

I'm not sure exactly what your talking about. The only pellets I know about are the ones you spread and wet but there $16 a bag. |

Location: NC | Pelleted bedding works wonder. I have a gelding who pees a ton and the pelleted bedding works wonders. Its like kitty litter and you take the clumps out. |

On dirt floors we put down lime, then stall mats, then bedding .... if you don' t have mats, just be sure to have bedding over the lime. |

Location: Okla | The problem I run into is the witchy mares make sure they have a "clean" spot in the shavings and pee on the mats!! Then the pee just sits there with shavings piled up all around it. |

As you know the ammonia smell is due to OVER feeding high protein feeds and the horse is peeing off the excess proteins. Cut back 25% on your high protein feed will be a big help.
KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BUYING >>
Hydrated Lime (Calcium Hydroxide) is caustic when wet. .. Known as whitewash when painting or using in outhouses. NOT a good stall freshener.
AG LIME .. is used to reduce the acidic level of dirt and aid in plant growth and it will also loosen tight soils for better absorption. AG Lime (Calcium Carbonate) is much safer. It can be bought in bulk or bagged also as "pelletized lime", which isn't nearly as dusty. Use when stripping a stall or when digging out the pee spot where geldings urinate in the center of the stall .. fill back in with sand or shavings.
If you want to run a quick cheap test ... buy a very large box of baking soda and dump in and round your pee spots after stripping a stall. It will knock down the smell by neutralizing the acidic pee.
KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING ..
you want to neutralize the acid pee to a ph level above 7 -12
The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is.
The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14.
A pH of 7 is neutral.
A pH less than 7 is acidic.
A pH greater than 7 is basic.
GOOD LUCK ....

Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | The problem with ours is our barn is build ontop of clay. We put a good 3 feet of sand on top of that but the pee soaks through and when it gets to the clay there's no where for it to go so it continues to puddle up and stay wet. We strip them all the way down to the clay and take a little off the top of the clay about 3 times a year. |
