What do you do for the final stages?  I am 203 days into treating a fence injury on a mare.  I feel like the healing has just stalled out.  I could just be crazy too.  I'm so tired off Vetericyn, Underwoods, Wonder dust, Nutrawound...   She straddled a fence that had been repaired by just adding more strands over the last 50 years.  Short story - extensive damage, vet recommended euthanization, I gave her the chance to recover.  Sentimental reasons.   I guesstimated it would be healed by Christmas.  It happened in May.  She has three areas still open.  I'm thinking of switching to Corona but geez that stuff is messy to apply!

I love corona for last step wound healing but that's just me. I wear gloves when I apply it. They now have it in a tube that makes application easier...

Do you by chance have pictures to share with us? I'd love to see the healing process with your mare!

when you say still open do you mean open and oozing or just popped the stitches out?

i have used underwoods from start to finish and had great success with it.....

I like Corona too, when you've reached the point of trying to seal it up and grow in hair. I am in the final stages of treating a wound on one of my geldings right now, in fact I was just going to switch to Corona today since I'm starting to leave it uncovered.

I've used Underwoods as well, and had good luck with it, but for me the best by far is black pepper and apple cider vinegar. I did something I had not done before with this last wound, which was make an ACV/black pepper paste and then wrap over it. Ordinarily I just spray ACV in the wound, pack the pepper in it, and then spray more ACV over it. It hardens in a few minutes to a scab-like crust and there is usually no need to wrap over it. I lived 14 of the last 17 years in southern AZ, and that option works great for the warm weather down there. I've used it for years! It helps keep out bugs and other nasties and will get rid of proud flesh in a hurry. Just clean off with water and/or peroxide and reapply as needed.

However, I live in Montana now and the snowy weather here lately has made my usual method difficult, especially since the wound I'm treating is on the lower leg. So what I did instead with the current wound was basically use the recipe for salt dough (http://familycrafts.about.com/od/claytyperecipes/a/bakedclay.htm), but substituted black pepper for the salt and ACV for the water. I smeared the mixture in the wound and then wrapped with a no-stick pad and vet wrap. I alternated that with just plain triple antibiotic ointment a couple times a week and they've worked beautifully.

I have pictures on my phone.  They're gross so fair warning.  I'll have to download/resize tomorrow at work.

No 'oozing', just slowly watching skin scrawl back together.  There are three little areas left and I'm just thrilled about that but I'm weary also.  The biggest one left is about 4" x 7". The flesh part seems to be as good so I was just thinking about changing tactics.  And there never were any stitches.  She shredded everything from her flanks, all down her back legs, to below her hocks, and there was nothing to stitch to.  I mean meat was cut and hanging or missing, bone was exposed, skin was just gone.  She scratched/cut herself up from mid belly to hoof.

She's fine now in mobility, doesn't limp, lopes when she wants, bucks, kicks, fights, will possibly even be trail ridden again.  She is my daughter's 22yo show horse and was basically retired anyway.

you might look into GenOne spray. Yes, it's for dogs but my vet gave it to me to treat a nasty cut below the pastern into the cornet band and I love it. it is Gentamicin Sulfate (kills Gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria), and Betamethasone valerate (reduces inflammation). has been wonderful at keeping proud flesh from forming and the skin looks very healthy. It's easy to doctor with because it's just a spray. Wipe the wound down and peel any crusty scabs that can be holding in the infection(not to much because of the new skin cells) and spray, let dry, and spray with an aluminum bandage

We had such good luck with Vetericyn treating that I am pretty sold on it. But if I had been doctoring since May, I would be frustrated too.

I used Underwoods from start to finish for a spray and fed NutraWound. It happened sometime before Christmas and sealed in pretty well by 5 months if I remember right. He tore all the hide down to the muscle in his chest and you could see into his chest cavity.

My failsafe is vetericyn but i had one a few years back scalp her back legs like that and after getting her mostly healed but it stalling out.... i started using sulfadine on her..its a cream of silver sulfadiazine....its usually used on severely burned patients because of its antibacterial properties but that stuff had her wounds closed and hair on em in like 2 weeks! And it was pretty gruesome. ... I rinsed it off once a day and used baby shampoo to help clean and then just reapplied by hand just globbed it on and smoothed n evened it out...it worked a miracle on mine and kept infection out ....i was stunned at how fast it worked i dont know if its prescription only - it was recommended by a human dr friend and he gave me a jar of it but your vet could write a script for it if so as i saw it on vet rx .com

Last bit of healing I actually like zinc oxide cream. The zinc in an antibacterial as well as stimulates cell growth.

If that doesn't work I have used preparation h don't know exactly why it works but will eliminate proud flesh and promote healing without a nasty scar.

I have done the acv and black pepper had great results but never used it for a wound that went stagnant

You many need to take the horse back to the vet and have them scrape the edges with a scalpel to initiate healing to progress.

In human clients have used medical grade pasteurized honey on stagnant wounds with wonderful success. Do not use normal honey as it can contain botulism. Some horses will never get sick but if the botulism can get into the blood stream your horse may die.

This is now about an inch wide, three inches long.  In this picture it was about 4x8.

I definitely will try to take pictures this weekend in the daylight.  It looks like a red burn, skinless, hairless, not much really.

Looking at that wound.. Id reccomend that since you are stalled out- to look at getting some skin grafts done... They are not nearly as expensive as you would think, and the difference they made is amazing...
