Location: Texas | I just got a new horse and he is behaving kinda odd. He hasn't really don't much in the last year and I am getting him in shape and finishing him on the barrels. He seems to get really sweaty pretty easy. Poor boy has tons of hair so that doesn't help... After I am don't working him he really stretches out like he is going to pee and the. Just stands that way for a minute or two the. Goes back to standing normal and then stretches back out. I feel like he hasn't been drinking enough so I have started to put electrolytes in his feed to get him to drink better. Once I unsaddle him he stops ... Not sure what to think. I want to ask the gal I got him from but don't want to upset her as selling him was really hard on him. Any ideas. I am taking him to get his teeth done and have him checked by chiro on Monday. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | He stops and acts normal after you unsaddle him? I wonder if your saddle is bothering him? Or cinch? I know they can act cinchy from ulcers, but not sure if that would make one stretch out like that, and only under saddle. |

Location: Texas | Yep once I uncinch him he stops doing it. I though possibly saddle but I have ridden him in a few different saddle and he still did it. Even different types of cinches. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | Have you tried a chiro/massage? I had a gelding that would act like he had to pee several times while I was riding him. I didn't ride him steady, but he seemed to do it just about every time so I finally menioned it to a vet. By then he had stopped doing it, so we never did find out what the deal was. I was told it could be kidneys and a million other things. Sometimes nothing too big a deal, but can be serious. |

| I have one that stretches out like that when he has a low-grade kidney infection, probably from not drinking enough water. |

Location: Texas | I will be interested in what if anything is found. After reading up on "tying up" I am thinking this may be the problem. Idk. I have only seen a horse Ty up once and it was horrible. He doesn't look like that but it definately cod be muscle cramping in his back and hind end. Might need to back off our conditioning program a bit and see how he does. I just feel terrie cause he is really sweet and wants to please me so much. |

| Does he drop when he does this like he actually has to pee and can't or does he just stretch out?
If its the first, I would be looking at a kidney infection from not enough water. We had a horse that always did it and he ended up really sick from it before his owners got him fixed up.
If its the latter, Tying up is my best guess, but it could be from needing the chiro.
I rode a gelding one that sweated a lot and would stretch out and spread his back legs (like he had to pee), only he didn't, and his owner told me that he hated to have sweat build up between his back legs, so whenever he started doing it, we just quick washed between his legs and he was fine. He was a major dork though and that was only one of his silly quirks. |

I have thought about that too. Have given him some electrolytes to try to help him up his water intake. I just went out and checked on him and my other two drank double what he drank. He has only been here a few weeks and may not like the water. He lived at his last home since he was a baby and he is 8 now |

Location: Oklahoma & Texas | Yea I'd be checking his sheath for a bean too....when he pees is it s pretty strait stream or is it like you have your finger on the end of a hose and spraying.....something is definitely up though ....he's stretching to relieve pain or pressure someplace.... |

Location: Texas | Is there a lot of starch in his diet? Does he get really stiff after he works out? I'd have blood work done and check to make sure he isn't tying up, then chiro/massage and check for a bean. |

Location: ARKANSAS | I would say he is Tying up, i have a gelding that did that everytime i rode him, he would stretch out, but never would pee, i had the vet come out and he put on Vit E and Selenium, and MSM to be fed Every day in his diet, and told me to add about a teaspoon of mortons lite salt ( like you get at the grocery store) in his feed once a day. I have done this for the past 10 years and he not ever tyed up again. he is EXTREMELY muscular...the more muscular they are, the easier it is for them to tie up. Also If your Guy is doing a lot of Sweating, you might want to slow down on your rehab program...and just ease back into it. Just like a human. You dont take someone that has never excercised and jump out and run a marathon, you have to take it in small steps. |

I have problems with one of my geldings tying up. I give him electrolytes and a low starch diet. He also gets his PHT blanket. Its made a huge difference. |

| Does he pee when you put him away?
For whatever reason my gelding has decided that he has to pee when we ride. Often he will pee under saddle, or just stretch out and stand there. If I tack him up in his stall he is stretched out peeing before I can get the girth snugged. It's almost like he's trained to pee when saddled like they train racehorses to pee when they whistle. He won't pee when I tack up in the cross ties but he will stretch out then when I get on. If I let him pee in his stall first he won't stretch out when we ride. If he doesn't pee before or during the ride, he will lee in the aisle when we are done.
We've never been able to find anything wrong with him. |

| My experience with tying up removing the saddle does not resolve the problem, so I am not 100% convince it is tying up.I suggest having the vet out immediately to pull blood and see if his ck levels are high, if so the horse is tying up.Ulcers come to mind as the horse's symptoms resolve with releasing the cinch. I just treat for min 30 daysBladder infection is a possibility I would have the vet do an in and out catheter and send it for culture.

Location: Montana | Our 3 yr old black stud would do this stretching out under saddle. He had both gastric and hind gut ulcers. After they were cleared up - no more stretching! |
