I am looking to get my mare a bonnet tie down because that is what her previous owner rode her in. I am just not sure what the difference is in them. The first picture is the one her previous owner rode her in but in pictures I saw of her she didn't put the nose piece on her, she had it just over her poll. Would the one in the second picture be more effective then? Since it just goes over the poll?

Well, for starters, #2 and #3 both allow the horse to extend his nose out while getting his head down. Both serve basically the same purpose, just made from different material.

So if her previous owner was riding her without the nosepiece then the 2nd or 3rd one would work because it dosn't have the nosepiece.

Yes I would not add the nose As far as rope vs wire I would keep what the previous owner did

ok thank you! I will probably go with the 2nd one as that seems to be the closest to what the previous owner was using.

The previous owner rode her in a cable one. Like the second picture in my original post so I figure I would go with one like that. Just to stay consistent.

I recently put my mare in one more like your 3 pic. However, mine has nylon across the pole and cable across the forehead. It's made an amazing difference. She can get her nose out and turn/run like she wants; a tiedown was inhibbiting that and she would fight it. But it still gives me enough stability to help keep her level in her turns. Dont be afraid to try several. Might see if you could borrow from friends till you know which one works for you and your horse

Here are a couple pics of the previous owner riding my mare and you can see the bonnet on her, to me it looks like it is one with a noseband, she just doesn't have the nose band around her nose. Its just up over her poll, so do the browband bonnets work in the same way? Do browband bridles interfere with them?

Thats what is happening to my mare, it doesn't seem like she can get her nose out and turn like she needs to with the noseband on. I don't have any close friends who use them unfortunately.. so its trial by error and hope I don't spend to much money!

I personally like my  leather bonnet, I had the cable bonnet and did not like it. Leather is much better.

I think the easy way would be give the other girl a call and see which bonnet she used on your mare.

Looks like she was useing this one but just has the noise piece tucked behind her jaw. So I would get the one without the noise piece.
