Now that I know for sure my colt just needs to build a thicker sole, what actually works? Not just harden and protect it but grow it. Vet suggested pads for next 3 farrier visits then rim pad if tolerable. Thanks!

I used Hoof Rite 2x. My farrier suggested the same thing and then recommended Hoof Rite 2x. Helped a ton!!!

Same boat. Just had xrays done on my off the track mare this passed weekend. Thin to almost no sole in some places. Shoer is coming back out this weekend to put some pads on her. I have started her on farriers formula double strength. My colt is on it and is growing quite a good amount of healthy foot, unforunately I can't quite tell you if it's help the sole itself.  Best of Luck!

When the toe is brought back into balance on the foot that is when your horse gets a thicker sole.supplementing so the hoof grows is also important.

The most important part in growing sole is that the foot is trimmed properly. The toe needs to be kept back & heels short & not underrun. I've fed dozens of different hoof supplements over the years & never truly saw any improvement in sole or wall quality until I changed how I trimmed. Once I adjusted my trim my walls no longer chip, soles are thick and healthy & horses are sound.  Nutrition is important as well but no hoof supplement has really given me impressive results.

I agree proper trimming every 4 weeks, I did this with shoes too

Shorten the toe to pull the heels back

Also what has worked best for mine and it was Pete Ramey old way was to carve the sole 1/4-1/2" around the frog reason for this is this allows better blood flow in and out of the foot. When the foot hits the ground the frog drops pulling blood in when the foot is in the air the frog retracts pushing the blood out of the foot. You need adequate blood circulation for a healthy foot. You do leave the rest of the sole alone.

As for supplements I haven't had much luck for sole growth, I have used milk powder to strengthen hoof wall, it has the appropriate amino acids needed.

Rivas remedies has a phenomenal book on wholistic medications, she believes in silica for building blocks, you may want to contact her and get her opinion.

Biotin alone is useless, zinc and methionine I have heard these are more important, but have not had first hand experience with those alone

My husband did a bunch of research and ended up getting
"Ker-a-form" for his horse and it helped a bunch. Then we went barefoot and his feet look amazing now. This stuff is a little pricey but we get a big 5-gallon bucket so it lasts a long time.

Check out Ultra Cruz by Santa Cruz Biotechnologies, has the correct amount of ingredients and is super reasonable on prices. I go through them for a variety of stuff now, their home brand of supplements seems to be very high quality.

First of all equipack is way better than a pad. You can get the one with the copper sulfate to prevent thrush. My trainer uses it on her navicular horse. I use it on my horse that has thin soles. The last three times she has been trimmed my farrier has not had to use it. You can order it from Jeffers to save some money then have your farrier put it in the foot. I just let my farrier bring it. You put a mesh thing under the shoe then fill it with the equipack. It forms a cushion in the sole. Neat stuff.

I have used Finish line Horseshoe for years. The past few days I have been comparing cost per day on several different suplements. I use several different Platinum products and I think the Platinum is a little cheaper per day. You realize that a new hoof must grow before you see any difference? Most hoof supplements build a stronger hoof not so much the sole. I have one horse that I don't ride any more and I keep shoes on his front feet because of his crappy soles.

Check out Biotin 100! It is the only thing that I've seen (besides consistent, quality trimming) that will help hardening a horse's feet. Dr. Ric Redden (like the godfather of equine podiatry) formulated it. I believe you only have to feed 1 oz. a day as well.

knox gelatin in the feed. Also (and some will flame) if you can find a hoof dressing with formaldehyde it'll make those hooves thick and strong. And there are hoof dressing with formaldehyde still added you just need to know who to talk to in order to get your hands on them.

Any supplement takes time to get in to their system so you won't see immediate results. Animal Element has Performance Detox which keeps my horses hooves growing and we have to stay on a strict 6 week schedule with the farrier.

Also had great luck with the Hoof & Hair by Equine Natural Care and it didnt' take 6 months to notice....In about 8 weeks was able to do without the pour in Equipad that we had been having to use. Hoof walls were stronger, heel quit acting like it wanted to contract and the back feet that we had left bare quit chipping. Now 6 months in and even with a crazy amount of rain and mud the last 2 months their feet look great, no thrush, no lost shoes even in 6 inches of sucking mud. And very cost effective!
