Location: Ft Worth TX | I have a 4yo paid in to Diamonds and Dirt Futurity- He has been hauling and exhibiting. Hauls GREAT, Not Spooky, Awesome 4yo BUT we are high loping our exhibitions and only 2 months from him needing to be ready to run!!!! I have confidence to ask for more now- the only thing he questions is if the ground is hard but other then that hes great. This is my first time to enter a futurity and i am a little worried now that I realized we are 2MONTHS OUT!!!!
I have always wanted to build a futurity horse but I am afraid I cramped my time a little to much. I got him in MAY and broke him, then patterned and heres were we are.
I set him up to early :( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTQHD6FAdAc&list=UUzs6VYtTgLHVlX5zXk...

Location: In my own world | Well guess what?! You will do better than me!! I'm paid in to DD too. I haven't competed in 10 yrs! and I've never enterted a futurity, hell I've never even been to an out of state show!! I just got my horse in Oct, she had 2 exhibitions under her belt, I've made 6 on her. There are very few shows around me in the winter. WE will have less than 20 runs under our belt by March. I am in complete and utter panic. I thought about backing out, but could tell my husband was disapointed. I've talked about going to watch DD since the first one. So he bought me a horse and trailer and said here go run. So Im scared to death, I'll probably be puking by the time I get there. But I'm going to go and have fun and meet new people and learn something hopefully!! Did I metion i'm trying to loose weight on top of all this!! Just come have fun and remember I'll probably be bringing up the rear!! |

| A lot of maturing can happen in two months. Take the pressure off yourself, enjoy each run, be confident and you never know … in two months you might be the winner. If not, you met your goal. You are win-win in my humble opinion. |

Location: Texas | I say go enter a race on him and go in there and run like you're trying to win the 1D. See where he's at being pushed like that, if he's not ready, don't sweat it, you are LEARNING. If he handles being pushed and doesn't fall apart I would try to get to races atleast twice a week and keep pushing him. There are lots of races coming up around the DFW area. Even if he's not ready to run tomorrow, 8 weeks is enough time, work on improving one thing each week and adding a little speed as you go along. He doesn't look too far behind to me, he actually looks pretty solid IMO |

You will be surprised by how many are not ready to be there! Including some with some very well known jockeys! They are babies! You will see quite a few that run like open horses, but not all! |

Just enjoy it while it lasts! Your not out to prove anything to anyone, don't let them ruin it by making you think you are. You and your hubby just need to go run and enjoy. Who cares how you do, besides you will always have the "it was our first time" excuse LOL. Hopefully one day I'll be able to go be competitive at a futurity. I'll probably be wigging out too. I think all non-snoody people do when they first try. |

Besides, if you are doing it for fun, let it be fun, Tell others that it is for fun, win, lose, or draw. And tell them to put that in their pipe and smoke it, LOL. You never know, you could kick butt that day! And if not, it will give you new things to accomplish and work on. Sometimes just making it there is a huge accomplishment, at least it is for me! |

 Go For It!
     Location: Texas |
What I have learned over the years is that no matter where you go, it's just another barrel race... The only thing that actually changes is the entry fees. You are definitely going to have to ride up if you want to be competitive there. Remember that you need to add pressure BEFORE you get to the futurity. He has to learn how to handle it now so he can be prepared when he gets there. Once you're there, the training is over and it's time for the test.
If you don't feel comfortable in your ability to get him where he needs to be, just get some help. Lots of folks start them and then get someone else to add the speed.
Good luck!

| Remember he is only 4. If it doesn't go well at his first race it's okay. You both have lots of runs ahead of you. No one who isn't in the saddle should be pressuring you. Your entry is paid, get yourself as prepared as you can, go make a run and hopefully he will be a rockstar, if not, put it behind you chalk it up to seasoning and start getting ready for the next one. |

You're coming to Texas???? I'll hold your puke bucket. I don't have a futurity horse but I'll probably be running a couple in the Open. I'm about 40 miles from there so if I can help with anything, just let me know!

Hopefully we can all meet up. Don't let anyone put any additional pressure on you as you will do enough of that yourself. Take a deep breath and relax. Enjoy the ride my friend. |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | There's an article on Barrel Horse News online I wrote a couple of years ago about this same exact thing.
Mine ran in the Juvi at the BFA in December and I bought him and signed him up for Ft Smith in May. I had a broke wrist when I bought him and hadn't sat on a barrel horse in 5+ years and it was only 4d at that and I was over 40. Although we almost dash boarded a few times and I had shots at 8am the first few times we lived and had a ton of fun. |

Location: South Dakota | Lanny Bassham has a very good book on mental toughness...The Mental Management System....With Winning In Mind. You can get it on Amazon. My bit of advice is to remember that your horse is counting on you to be the leader...the pilot...he's needs you to be solid :) Congrats on getting your horse entered up...have fun!!! |

Location: In a happy place | Well I think we all realize it is hard to compete with the professionals that get to haul theirs so much because they go more than the average person. It looks to me like you have done a super job training him. As someone said two months and they can mature a lot. Like Bibs said maybe the two of you can buddy up when you get there and just go have fun running and watching. Do the best you can with what you have to work with laugh and have a good time. Bet you will do better than you think you can. |
