How far along are your just turned 4 year olds in their training? Are they ready to start entering a little or just starting the pattern?

I just entered my 4 yr old Perks Alive this past weekend for the first time... she saved me on #1. Might find a futurity to go to this fall but might not.

Mine is all over the place.  She won the 1D at 4 local jackpots in December, but I'd hauled, worked, and run her at those arenas before, so she was confident.
I took her to OKC and in a big show setting, with no exhibition, she was a little more scatterbrained.  She was .75- 1 second off the winning times down there against horses that ran all year long.  She made pretty runs, she just didn't fire as hard there as she does at home where she's more settled in.  That will come with more hauling!
I am happy with her, she will be tough by the time the summer and fall futurities are here, which is my goal with her.

I think these colts look great!  Whoop Z Day Z, all you need is to add a little speed and challenge your colt a bit I think.  Sometimes that is the hardest part I think in training these things is allowing them to make mistakes.  When our pride is on the line we want them to be perfect.  When I watch those at the top of the futurity horse game, they have done their homework and their horses are well prepared, but when the money is on the line they throw caution to the wind and try to win it.  Often it may not be the prettiest run, but it's effective, and they don't ask you at the pay window if it's pretty!

Believe me, I have struggled with this very thing and still do sometimes because I want my horse to work like i've taught him too and end up riding very conservatively because I had put so much pressure on myself and felt like others were as well.  Finally when I learned to let it go, enjoy my colt, and just try to go win something my horses at the time took that step up and started maturing from nice working 3D young horses to ground pulling, hard running competitive horses.  Not all of them, but they all took a step in the right direction.

I encourage you to challenge yourself and your colt a bit.  Speed him up and see what happens.  Be prepared.....he's going to make mistakes and so are you....remember that when you speed him up the two of you have to get your timing down at the increased velocity.  But if he attempts to work, it's a successful day.  No pressure, just go make a run, enjoy your horse, and most of all, try to win something!  I'm betting your horse is alot more ready than you think......

Good luck to you and I hope to meet you down there at the D & D!!!!!  I'll be cheering for you!

Speeding one up is the hardest part for me by far, but it needs to happen, and SOON. I trust he will work hes honest as they come- I tend to be a scardy cat on the speed end... How Ironic lol. Thank you for the encouragement- I hope to meet you at D & D too we need to have a BHW meet and greet there! Now i may not breath my whole run but you are right I have watched many of futurity winning runs not be perfect!

I was sitting in the stands back in the early '90's with Ed Wright! He said the biggest mistake most futurity riders make is not being able to stop training and just let em work!
