i have a horse who runs good hes usually 2d i know hes fast but he doesn't give 100 percent when we go in for a run his ears are up and he looks everywhere while he runs he never just focus and runs! hes 8 hes been hauled since he was 4 and i just dont get it. i breeze him through fields he knows how to run. I take him in open arena and let him see everything, i also have not took him in thinking this might make a difference but still same result.

I would start taking him to every event that you can attend, no matter what it is, and ride in the ring at every opportunity. Enter the schooling shows, 4H shows (they usually have Open classes), etc, to get him used to just being in different arenas.

Sounds like CC...I hauled her more than any horse I've ever had, even hauled for time only's when I didn't have the money to enter just to try to help with her issues. The best thing I ever did for her was to put her on Silver Lining herbs Keep Cool. I had tried several other products that are well respected and for whatever reason for CC they did not work, one made her more bonkers, its like she focused on what scared her, the other made her a zoned out druggie. The Keep Cool let her still remain responsive but without the over reactive part of it. After about 3 months I started only giving it to her about 2 days before an event and after 6 months she finally had enough good experiences when she did get scared she would look back for me. So much more confidence in herself.

I'd be looking at the sugar content in his diet.

I second the Keep Cool. I noticed a major difference in my gelding. He would be half spaced out at the first, a little better on the 2nd, and by the time we got to the 3rd he realized what we were doing. I also use it a lot on my young horses when I first start hauling them places. It seems to help them relax a little without making them dull.

How much do you ride him to warm up before you run?  I had to ride my old gelding for an hour when he was 5 and 6 before I could run him or his brain wouldn't be between his ears.  Now that he's 20, I can warm him up for 20 min - 1/2 hour and he's fine.  He was just a bit of a noodle-head when he was young!

I have one just like this so I'm interested in seeing some ideas, glad you posted it.. Mine is NOT hot at all, hes not giving his 100% because hes to busy looking around, never spooky just very unfocused.. Like its boring to him.. He also gawks at billboards, planes, behind him, to the side and anything else while just out riding the horse just can not foucs at all anywhere.. Its like he has ADD..
