So the other night I had a neigborhood kid run down my fence, and he left and didn't say a word. The only reason I found out what neigbor it was, was because they left their licence plate in the fence. My husband posted about some retarded drunk running down our fence, before the cops tracked the kid down and then we got these notes on facebook.

Don't know how long you have lived here, but a couple words of advice, You live right in the middle of all that's kids family who by the way is a 6th generation in the county.Don't crap on your neighbors, kido!! Do not appreciate you calling my grandson a retard.

I don't quite know how to take it? I really want to write back because these neighbor kids, speed down the road like crazy to the point I won't even let me nephew ride down the road on his bike. They let their dog's run and they throw their trash out in our ditch. I didn't intend to start a war but I don't want to be bullied either.

I don't care who they are. THey should have the decency to apologize and fix your fence. Sounds like they have gotten away with a lot through the years and expect you to look the other way. Be stern but cautious.  I would write back and apologize that my husband called her grandson a retard but you had no idea who it was since they did not stop and apologize or offer to repair the fence. Let her know you want to be good neighbor and would like the same from everyone else, including an apology and an offer to repair the damaged fence. Tell her that you have concerns with being able to let your nephew ride his bike down the street. Be honest but in a nice neighborly way.

Maybe write him back saying if the kid had fixed the fence he tore up, then no one would know what a retard you think he is. I too have problems with the drunk neighbor putting up a swimming pool ladder over our fence to go to his friend's to drink and leaving his bottles in our pasture. I now walk the fence throwing his bottles into his own yard and returning his ladder to his own property. No use talking to him since he'll just lie and say No habla English. I also have to patrol the road on July 4 and new years so they don't shoot off fire works into our pasture, which one year they did set on fire. Luckily it only burned about a half acre before they could get it out. We were out of town and came home to see it. No one would own up to it. So I feel your pain.

I would not deal with these people directly considering how they already are handling things with you.
I would go through the legal system and let them hold the kid responsible . I would also screen shot the post you copied above in case things escalate after they recieve the bill.

My husbands truck slid on the ice into the neighbors new vinyl fence last week and the first thing we did was knock on her door , get the installers # who put up her fencing and ordered a new panel through them to fix next week. The next day I sent him over with fresh lemon bars. When you ruin something that is not yours you fix it , not leave the scene.

I'd write them back and tell them that you called the kid a retard before you knew it was them, because it looked like a drunk retard had hit your fence.....let me give you an example of my letter to them.

Dear Neighbor,

Nice to meet you. Please, accept my apology for calling your grandson a retard. I spoke prematurely. At the time, I wasn't sure we'd ever find the person that ran over 600 feet of fence. Judging from the amount of damage, we assumed that only a drunk retard or someone traveling 80 miles per hour could leave such damage. Please, let me know where to send his license plate and the bill for the cost of new fence and labor. Since he is not retarded (per you), I can only assume that he has a speeding problem and will pray that he does not kill himself or someone else should this happen again.

Your neighbor who owns a double barrel shot gun, assault rifle and a viscious chihuahua,

Hannah :)

The sheriff has already been out, made the kid come out and clean up the mess and apologize. The kids parent's insurance is covering the damages. I was just totally caught off guard getting the note from the grandmother.

Since it has been taken care of........I would send a short note to GM on FB and apologize......but I would point out that there wouldn't have been any need to post anything on FB had the "young man" stopped and told you about the incident.

Yeah, we have some families like that in our area. Their families pretty much started the little town, so they think they run everything. Not really as liked or respected as they like to believe, but be prepared to be harassed. When we first moved out here we kinda went through this. Nothing serious and now that the kid is grown with kids of his own, it's uncomfortable for him and hilarious for us. He is a good guy now but a little wild when he was young.

We are not friends with them on FB. I'm guessing they saw it or heard about from mutal friends that we most likely have. It is a very small town.

When did facebook become so freaking serious?

First of all, did you name the grandson specifically in your post?  Well, then, if you didn't, then technically you didn't call HIM a retard.  Second, is his grandmother friends of yours on facebook?  If not, she saw the post because it was public, so change your settings....

Lastly, people (speaking of the grandmother) really need to stop using facebook as a bully method.  Had she truly been offended by the retard comment, she should have asked you to your face to not call her grandson that.  I hate facebook at times like this.

My advice, the kid apologized, he cleaned up his mess, it's being paid for by the insurance company.

Be the bigger person and ignore the message and walk away from it.  No good will come of any response, no matter how rude or how polite you will be.

And not that it matters......but I really hate the word retard no matter how it is used......it was originally "invented" and associatd with the mentally handicapped.  So when you call someone a retard, it could be translated to that capacity, which offends me (not that it matters) since I have an aunt who is in fact mentally "challenged" (not handicapped if you ask me).  She has Downs Syndrome.  Now I don't think any less of someone who uses the word, it's just a word, but just call him stupid next time.

No my husband didn't post a name because we didn't know who did it. I really, really want to write something but in my heart I know no matter what it will not go well, no matter how I try to word it. I will save the message just in case we have any problems. I plan on putting in cameras too.

See, you already knew before you asked.

It's not easy, especially when you are the victim of some persons stupidity.  And now you feel bullied.  It's not fair.  Quite frankly, the grandmother really had no right to message you.

But I think ignoring it will make your life easier.  And I do like the idea of saving it.
