The two posts on the other thread was very interesting in regards to how horses need starch for energy to run, and how easily they burn it off even before they run if their heart rates get above 155.

So if I'm understanding the other post, conditioning can help with the glycogen storage and the time it takes to access it for energy-- is that correct?

What type of conditioning is best for that? Routine sprints or long trotting?

How would you manage a horse that's an easy keeper and laid back as far as feed program? They need that boost of energy for running but too much starch they get fat.

What about pastes vs feed source (corn, beet pulp, etc) prior to a run?

There are two different muscle groups the fast twitch and slow twitch (not sure the technical terms)

The fast twitch condition by sprinting (I believe these use the glycogen)

The slow twitch condition by long trotting/endurance(I believe these use the fat stores)

This is why in my fitness program, I walk trot, lope, and a few days a week I will sprint. I also make sure half way through the sprint I stop and switch leads.
