Does anyone send their entries in right away once they're available (excluding entries that allow you to pick your time slot) or do you wait until the postmarked day?  Or do you just always pay the late fee if they allow late entries?  I'm always parnoid that my horse will get hurt and since I don't have a back up I will have wasted the money, but I know that a lot of people have back up horses.

I know a lot of factors go into it... but I'm just curious (and bored out of my mind right now!!) as to what people do in general!

I do not procrastinate, I usually enter all 3  close to when entires open.   I like to get my preferred time slots.

I used to always pre-enter. But now that our lives have changed (2 young boys and different jobs) I've learned that I never know what's going to come up and if I'll actually get to go. And I'm with you, if my horse gets hurt I don't really have a back up right now that I can justify hauling. (I don't even want to know how much I've donated to the BBR finals because of vet outs and life).

My thinking now is that I'd rather pay the late fee (which is usually about $20 or less for the weekend) than lose all of my entries because I can't go.

I almost had to eat my Jud Little entry last fall (thankfully the lady that raised and trained my gelding that was sidelined loaned me a horse she was training) because I pre-entered (didn't want all those slots to fill up!) and couldn't vet out. I got all my BBRs in... but now I can't even enter the BBR Finals because I know that by 3/15 he won't be running... and I'm not going to put all that money on the line hoping that he'll be ready to go six weeks later..... learned my lesson!!

I decided that last year I would enter the OKC Shootout as a late entry from now on just so I could run later in the evening and take advantage of the cooler temperatures!

I pre-entered the Summer Shootout several times and about died from the heat. Then one year I late entered and ran really late, it was so nice! If I ever get to go again I'll late enter just to avoid the heat!

I usually send entries in well before deadline...once last fall I sent them past the due date, but that was due to a last minute idea to go! This year Il have some futurity entries to send in AND those might be down to the wire only because I'm nervous about entering....

Depends on the show.  I usually enter futurities on time because the late fees will kill a person otherwise.
But open shows, I usually put it off until the last minute or enter the day of the show.  Especially during the winter and spring time, between bad weather, calving, foaing, and breeding, I never know if I will actually be able to be gone or not.

i usually don't procrastinate. I have two so hopefully if one is out, the other wouldn't be. I like to hold myself accountable considering I'm the queen of finding any excuse to stay home in my jammies and watch a Law and Order marathon.......

I usually send in by the post mark date, unless it's a show where electrical will sellout and I need it.  I've only been burned once where I couldn't recoup my entry fees (selling spots or vetting out), but some of the late fees are so high and I don't like to run at 3am, lol.

For me it depends on the format. If they allow vet or medical outs, or horse/rider substitutions then I'll pre-enter early. If they won't then I wait to the last minute. I know it's easy for horses to get hurt (even a stone bruise) that can knock them out of an event so as long as I can either vet out or bring another horse I'll enter.

When hosting an event we allow vet outs until the close of entries and after that we will allow you to swap horses or sell your spot to another rider. We do the draw and figure out payouts once entries close so in my mind allowing someone to take a spot is fine by me because it doesn't change the payouts. The only thing I have to do is change the name in the draw.

The only thing I pre enter for is Nbha world and that's because I can't handle a $200 late fee.

I've eaten a LOT of entries for the Summer Shootout due to horse injuries BUT I don't like to run at 3:00 am either. I will not EVER pre-enter during the winter, never know about the roads/weather.

Most of mine I preenter because stalls and electrical will sell out pretty fast and its pretty easy to sell spots at them.

Late enter. It's a lot cheaper to late enter than to lose an entry fee.

I don't futurity but I always enter the day of the race. Sometimes I don't go due to weather or decide to go rope instead or change my mind. So late fees are easier for me.
