Caballo is a 6 year old gelding that I have owned for about 7 months. I know that it takes time to get in sync with a new horse when you get it, about a year is what I have heard. We have been to a handful of races and we improve every time we go, but I feel like he just has so much more to give and I'm not sure how to light the fire in him to get him to give it to me. He came from Indiana and up there he was competing in the 2D and we haven't gotten anywhere near of getting out of the 3d around here...are the times up there that much slower or do you guys think he just needs some more encouraging? We were told that he had sat in a field for a year and hadn't done anything and we have a feeling he was close to being blowed up because he had a horrible habit of rearing. I have added using a whip while we run and it has shaved a second off of our time but other than that he's just going through the motions while running the pattern. I am going to take him and change his job for a month and see how that does for him, but I am open to any ideas! He's more peppy while trail riding than he is when we are getting ready to run! I am currently uploading some videos to YouTube so you guys can see them. Also here is a copy of his breeding not sure if it's needed or not, but just thought I'd add it too. http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/blu+smokn+caballo
Any help will be appreciated! Thank you guys so much!!!....

Im sure others will chime in so heres a bump.. from what I see you are already pulling  on his head before you even get to barrel...the last video is more clear .....possibly get him more supple in his ribs and that would help to..go back to basics with yourself and work on your seat and his suppleness..

he seems like he wants to work though.. you are just riding his head it appears..

JMHO, you are not balanced on this horse and pulling on his head.  Work on getting more balanced in your seat and he should become supple and eager to please.

I think he looks good except for the last video...the last video for some reason you really pulled his head, I think maybe you thought he was going too close to the barrel? But other than that, I thought he looked good in the other vidoes, although they were blurry for me (and the 3rd video the link didnt work). He might just need more confidence or might be sore somewhere/have ulcers so he's not really firing. Does he do anything off the pattern to indicate he doesn't feel 100%? Cross-firing, picking up the wrong lead, not tracking all the way under himself, stiffness or hesitance when asked to do certain maneuvers...

You said he had a rearing problem before, but what's he like at the gate now?

Thanks! the last video would be one of our first races that we went to together. i did pull him up some going to the first barrel bacuse i felt like he was going in to close to it, so i pulled him up to move him over some. He might be sore, he does need his back adjusted and he is picking up leads good, no cross firing and he got his teeth done recently and he doesnt do anything like he isnt feeling good off the pattern. He also doesnt have any issues with the gate now, i fixed those as soon as i got them because i knew they could be dangerous...thats whats made us think he was about blowed up becasue of that habit. He hasnt been treated for unclers for did have a power pack put through him around september. He is over reacting every once in a while but i changed farriers so i think that may be his problem there...how would you reccomend building up his confidence? he seems to be alot more ready to up and go while we are doing anyting else but barrels, also he is a little out of shape too so i am going to try to get him in better shape and hopefully that will help too!

To me you really never get up out of your saddle to push him...it looks like you are always sitting. He also looks to bounce around the 1st barrel in all of the runs so smoothing that out would help a bunch. It also looks like you sit to soon going into 3rd barrel...I would hussle another 2 strides into that barrel.
