It has been a long terrible recovery for this poor horse. Long story short, shoer used my horse as a learning project for his students. Confronted him multiple times, then showed up unannounced to find him being used again as a "demo." Needless to say, fired immediately. Have a new shoer that has been slowly correcting the hack job they did on this gelding.

Was completely sound until one day I noticed blood coming from small quarter crack at coronet band. Completely crippled hours later. Shoer came out next day, dremeled and wired it. X-Rays were done 4 days later. He has a parallel (0 degree) palmar angle. Small wedge and egg-bar shoe was put on. He has been feeling great and getting stir crazy. Today he was so full of himself and running around he ended up cracking all the way back up to the coronet band and bleeding quite a bit.

I'm at a loss at what to do for this horse. Vet and shoer are working together to get him growing healthy and solid, but it seems every step forward we take a giant step back. Has any dealt with something like this? Any suggestions? It breaks my heart to see him like this. :(

Yes ma am, i had bought a gelding w "not so big of a deal" crack, he was injured as a yearling, but turned into a hell of a rodeo horse, anyways he was all heart....

When we got him, girl said it wasnt a big deal, well i went thru 7 farriers here where i live and they all made him worst, one guy did the dremmel tool thing and egg shoe and all that did was make him bleed and split it wider, last guy put a cast on the foot in attempt to keep the foot stable and get to grow, that was a no go..... One vet suggested nerving that section of the foot, but we disagreed....

Long story short, we were gonna put him down, he was in so much pain and couldnt stand to see him like that, called girl i bought him from, she took him back and just turned him out, he is still alive but aging very fast.

We live down her on the texas coast and the wet humid environment aling w the black gumbo just wasnt in our favor...

Ge is back out in west texas in the rocks and cactus were its hot and dry

I was heart broken as he was my 1st anniv gift from the hubby....

Good luck, its a tuff situation.....

I would look at feed.

I had good luck with adding flax, biotin, magnesium, zinc suppliment, and milk powder.

The fat moisturizes

The biotin mg, zan allow the foot to grow faster

Milk powder thickens the hoof wall, it is the amino acids that are important

I also apply fish oil to the cornet of the foot to moisturize the foot. I buy cheap fish capsules and squeeze two per foot.

This has got all my horses crappy feet to no foot problems nor cracks. Mine are also all barefoot, no need for shoes

I was the quarter crack queen for a while.  Had three quarter cracks on front feet, due to farrier.  I finally jerked the shoes and went barefoot.  But every time I got that quarter crack grown out where I thought it was stable, I would ride him and it would run back up and bleed.  I finally paid $$$$ and had the quarter cracks laced so they couldn't move until they were completely grown out.    Kept the horse barefoot.  Two years later...  best thing I've ever done.  Horse had been on/off lame since he was 4.  He is now 8 and finally 100% sound barefoot!  My advice...  either have the cracks laced and/or no riding & only confined movement until those cracks are grown out.  <sorry>  :(

The first one I had finally healed when she was put in a heart bar shoe, laced and patched the crack and stalled for a year.  We are still, two years out, dealing with the issues created from having a heart bar on one foot and not the other and being stalled for a year.

We were given a TB mare that had a quarter crack in a hind foot, we just turned her out and kept her trimmed and the crack has grown out nicely.  She is currently back in training, barefoot and completely sound.

I am not sure if the first mare would have healed if we would have turned her out barefoot but I wish I would have at least tried.

In order to grow a new healthy hoof you need a supplement with Zinc, methionine, biotin, plus it is essential to have a source of amino acids. Hooves are protein and if you do not have all the necessary amino acids the proteins cannot form. Platinum Performance is not just a mineral supplement but also an amino acid supplement. Check the label on your supplement. I feed Platinum Performance for the amino acids and Finish Line Horseshoe as a hoof supplement. When I finish the container I amy change to the Platinum hoof supplement. My horse's feet grow like crazy. I have one that has a crack from her coronary band done and just about have it grown out. Even my farrier says my horses feet grow like crazy. I have to have mine done every 4 weeks for a different reason.

Thank you for the responses!

For those bringing up feed. This is what he is currently on, please let me know if you would add or change anything!

Renew Gold

Have any of you tried the BOT, MagnaCu, PHT Bell boots? Wondering if they have helped at all and worth the investment.

Thank you again.
