Has anyone made a run missing a shoe (horse) before? My friend's horse threw a front shoe and her farrier can not make it out before tomorrows race. I have never had this happen before. Is there risk of injury?

I did it before with my farrier's permission. Never again, my horse took a big chunk out of his foot which took 8 months to start looking normal.

I would suggest duct taping the hoof missing the shoe just so it doesn't get torn up, but I'd probably make the run.

If my gelding looses a shoe, I don't go anywhere.  I have known people who will wrap duck tape around the bottom half of the foot to help prevent it from breaking off.  I just prefer to not run if that happens.

I wouldn't however you could pull the other front shoe and run barefoot, but if the horse is used to being shod it may not run quite right without shoes.

Depends on the run being made. If it was to make it into a finals they depended on the average then yes if it didn't then I wouldn't chance it

My mare lost her left front shoe the night before a race. We went and her left front slipped out from underneath her and we both fell over around our first barrel. I wouldn't do it again. Lesson learned. Luckily we were both ok.

Look at where you'll be tying your horse at and where you have to walk to get to the warm up pen and arena. If you have to walk across a lot of gravel I would say the chance is very good your horse will get too sore to run if you have to cross the gravel much.

I have one horse that must prefer to run with only three shoes.  She likes to lose hers during the night before a race.  Or the week after she's had her feet done.  I just keep her off the rocks or pavement from the trailer to the arena.

I would not. The horse will be off balance and duct tape, hoof boots, etc. wouldn't provide the traction and stability your horse needs.

Yep pull the other and run or sit the race out. Horse's can't get grip with duct tape on their feet and 1 shoes off is enough to unbalance him.

A lot would depend od ground too. If it is a real sandy arena, i will. I went one weekend a couple years ago untill it get hot around here i was just using frony shoes on my horses. I also have a good farrier and both my horses lost one shoe nobody cout put on on. I used to be able to do a nail once in a while and i always keep one shoe for front feet in my trailer. The arena was sandy and but they a stone parking lot. But we had a great sandy warm up area. I lead them across parking lot got on the in warm up pen and ran them. My little black mare had thinner soles and had to,keep her shod.

My ex who is a shoer would get PO'd when girls pulled the other shoe. He said there was no need for it and then he would have to fix 2 shoes. But that was him, you might see what your shoer would say.
