Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | Save money? My horses teeth are due in April and it will cost $375. If I don't start saving now then I'll never have it on time. I'm horrible with money. I've tried putting money up in a place and putting some in every week but I steal from it saying I'll put it back but never do. I've tried giving money to a family member every week but eventually I'll beg enough they will give it to me. So what's the best way to go about doing it? I thought about putting it in a bank account that I couldn't get it until time for me to have it but I don't know if banks give that option. I don't care if it draws interest just somewhere where I can't steal from it.

| Does your horse need special dental work for some reason? If not ask for a regular float (without the power tools is what I am implying) if your horse has no major issues and the cost will be significantly less. As with saving the money - do you have someone you can give the $$ to that you can trust to save on your behalf? That way you can't access it and you can ask said friend for the cash right before your horse's appointment. My two cents. |

| Can you make payments to your vet/ dental person in advance? I doubt you could talk them in to giving it back :). |

That's for 3 horses. It's $125 each. He only does power floats. There's not another dentist around here and I've always heard not to use a regular vet. |

Location: Willows, CA | I hate power floats!!! Too much tooth removed too fast. Once that material is gone, it is gone forever. A hand float will index from tooth to tooth and give a truer surface. And, the vet has to work hard to take too much off. |

Its a credit card that can ONLY be used at vets, doctors, dentists...ect..... You can apply online at there website. I like it for emergencies or if I have budgeted a vet bill and then the vet happens to find something and it goes over what I had budgeted.lol |

I can afford them. I just can't save money. They come first but ok trying to keep it so I don't have to miss any barrel races like I did last year. But if I miss them I miss them. They don't skip having teeth done or injections done. |

| I use online savings accounts (Capital One 360). Every week, I have money automatically sent to a variety of savings accounts so I don't ever "see" the money. It is linked to my regular checking account, so I can transfer money back and forth, but it does take 2-3 days to transfer from the savings account into my checking. This makes me double think about whether I really need that item and also makes me plan ahead to be sure I transfer the money in time for when I need it. If you need $375 in April, you have roughly 9 weeks to save, so start putting $40/week into an online account each week and you'll have the money when you need it! |

Location: Oklahoma | When I was in High School I always gave my money to my mom.... Now that I'm older and know how satisifying it is to watch my side pile of cash grow it becomes easier to set back money on the side for "extras". It's nice to be able to go to trade show or local barrel race and not see it hit my bank account. I just put money aside for those things as I have it. If I don't have the money to hit a race then I don't go.
I also ask myself when I'm shopping "do I want this more than that?" As in a new purse might cost me the same as a two day overnight race..... But I'd gladly pass on the purse, but I don't want to skip the race.
I know that it's convenient to have all your stuff taken care of in one trip to vet, but could you span those floats over the course of your next three paychecks? I don't think it's gonna hurt a hurt to be two weeks early or two weeks late. |

| It sounds like you need to budget
Quit making excuses for taking the money
Figure out how much you need for food, fuel, expenses. Put teu money in envelopes with the thing written on them, and once the money is gone, that's it.
You need to change your way of thinking |

I could space them out. That would be a lot easier on me but the dentist doesn't live around here and it may be 2 or 3 months until he's back here. I host him at my barn the middle/end of April mainly because I get a discount for doing it. I never had a problem until last year. Life was easy when daddy paid but now I'm on my own with it so I have to figure out I to afford everything my self. I get paid every week. I already have $80 in a envelope in my bra drawer(don't hate lol) cause that's the least likely place for me to see it and have the urge to spend it. |

Location: Montana | I know people will probably jump down my neck for this, but I use a regular vet...because we don't have an equine dentist around here. But she is very good and uses both power and hand float. However, it is only about $15 cheaper per horse than what you are paying, including the farm call.
As for saving money, what I do is take a set amount from my income and tuck it away. It has worked pretty well so far. So let's say I make $80, I'll put $20 away or whatever, just for instance sake. But any raise I get I save. But if I do borrow from myself, I always pay myself back some way, some how. It just takes a lot of self-discipline. |

I've known him for a long time and he's been doing my horses for a lot of years and I honestly believe he would help me out but I don't want to ask him too. |

| I don't really think you should ask him to help you out, you've got 3 months to save...that's $125/month. Honestly, if you are not able to save that amount between now and then, you need to make some changes - either in how many horses you have or whatever else you spend money on that you don't really need. |

I'm gonna ask him about the care credit or start making payments now. I just don't want him to think I'm asking for help. |
