Yes, technically, however you can buy it on certain websites without an Rx.

I just buy it from my vet.

Here's my take.....
Pentosan is a perscription product, but there seems to be a way around it:

If you buy from Wedgewood pharmacy yes you need a perscription (you pay less if your vet will let you order and just call in the perscription)

horseprerace.com lets you buy without a perscription but is higher priced than wedgewood.

If cost is your concern horseprerace is probably the way to go, If you are more concerned about having a company stand behind you if something should go wrong, I would advise wedgewood (they are a compounding pharmacy with standard and regulations)
Before anyone jumps down my throat, I know many people buy from horseprerace with great luck-infact I'm considering some of their products as well, but when I first started using pentosan, wedgewood was leaps and bounds cheaper than horseprerace and now they are coming down.  I also have an excellent vet that does not upcharge.

My vet used to order it for me from Wedgewood and it was 200.00 for a 30 ML bottle. I buy from horseprerace now and its 139 for 50ml. It took me a while to trust them but have been through few bottles with great results. I am actually seeing FASTER and better results with the pre race stuff. I have no idea why, they are both same concentration of active ingredient etc. Maybe there is a carrier difference? Have no idea. But my horses respond within a few hours of injection. My good horse has a fusing hock that "Pops" every step he takes if not on pentosan. When it starts popping about every 10-14 days I give a shot right when I get home from work at 2PM. I feed horses and let them eat until 430 or so and when I go ride no popping noise what so ever. Its weird. LOL But it works!

If I am not mistaken, and I could be, LOL but Pentosan of any type is not FDA approved for Injection in horses in the United states. SO no matter who you get it from its all off label and you won't have a leg to stand on if something happens?

Point taken and you are correct.  I guess my issue with using horseprerace is when asking my vet about where to buy and listing either wedgewood or horseprerace he was the one that had directed me towards wedgewood.  Once again, many people do not know it and many vets do not follow the rules but wedgewood is just like walking into a CVS, if your doc calls a perscription in for you, your doc doesn't make extra money.  If your vet was charging you $200 from wedgewood it was because HE was upcharging, which is illegal too.  My last bottle was delivered to the house direct from wedgewood 100ml for $170.

AND I'm still not counting our horseprerace just in case things go south at wedgewood but I do know one thing Pentosan is a good drug, that many people have NO idea how good it is.

Yea I have discovered just how good it its. THere has been TONS AND TONS of research and good results using it for YEARS in Australia and New Zealand. I don't think an Ozzy horse has different joints or arthritis than USA horses. LOL They have some crazy stuff on there. I also have a bottle of the Platinum from them, as well as a bottle of dex, and Omeprazole. THey also have LEGEND (Equivelant) for $15 a dose!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use the GOLD mostly. Which is pentosan+ Glucosamine. I think thats why I am getting better results with it than Wedgewood. I know they make a gold version to but never used it.. I have a bottle of the platinum. Just haven't cracked it out yet. LOL

I buy from horse Prerace, Pentosan Gold and give 6 cc IM 36 hours before a run.  I usually only go a couple of times a month, I will sometimes alternate with Polyglycan which I give in the vein.

What's the cost on the Gold vs platinum ?

Gold is 139 for 50ml bottle and platinum is 39.00 for 18ML bottle. But the Platinum is a single use vial/

The protocol is to give 4 shots one week apart. The dose comes out to be 5cc for smaller horses and 6cc for bigger ones. There is an actual dose on the website. Most on here give 5-6cc depending on horse size. Reason for dosing is it is an anticoagulant of sorts. Mild one. SO I would not give to horses who are bleeders within a few days of hard exercise. My good horse gets 1 dose every 10-14 days or so. My colt is monthly or more if being used hard. Both were given the 4 dose loads.

My take on Pentosan is that it "washes" the joint of arthritis, so I'm not really sure it's a great preventative.  I began using it because it has shown to increase length between injections.  I have a horse that hung a leg in the fence and it shows significant arthritis resulting in hock injection.  I asked my vet about preventatives and right away he said adequan.  I asked him to look into pentosan and his response was it's your horse, your decision.  I've had the injections last 2 years between them!  I'm terrible about preventatives, not sure I believe in them.  Most things can't prevent accidents or misuse of an animal-they need to be in good shape AND being the cheapskate I am my horses need to deserve their care.  Have a 16 yr old heading horse that had his first hock injections last summer he gets pentosan monthly, after diagnosing arthritis in both hocks-he probably should have had pentosan earlier.  It's cheap enough to give to young ones BUT, those young ones are most likely to try to kill themselves too, meaning keeping them without cutting themselves for 48 hours after an injection can sometimes be a challenge.  Have a friend that had a gate fighting mare that she hauled all over the country to find a solution, no real pinpoint of any kind of lameness....farrier said to try some pads on the front feet, she gets pentosan monthly as well and maybe a week before a 2-3 race weekend and she won a ton of money in the last 2 years.

We start with 6 cc for everyone for 4 weeks and usually monthly after that, the ones that are a little touchy might get a booster every 2 weeks or so if we are really in some heavy ground or work or a lot of runs in a short time.

Very pleased with it if you can't tell by the book I've written!  It's great for a cheapskate like me!

Yea, Pentosan works differently than Adequan does. I gave my colt a 7 shot series of adequan right when I got him. Then have been using pentosan inbetween annual adequan reloads.

I agree with everything above. Its working wonders on my good horse WITH ARTHRITIS and wonders on my colt who was off the track. Xrays Look clean but the mere fact he was a race horse for 2 years you know he had some hard work on some very young joints.
