One of my students sent me a pony (large like barely a pony height pony)
When they first got this pony he would FLY but a year later he's got where he just won't run... They wanted me to ride him for a week and see what I could do for it... He was dropped off Sunday and I've noticed he doesn't want to eat... So in thinking maybe he had ulcers... I called and asked and they confinement that he doesn't eat all his feed at home as well... Could ulcers be causing him to bit what to run as well?

Yes it could.  When they have ulcers, their stomach burns from the acid.  What are you feeding? A easy way to test is give aloe Vera juice about 30 minutes before you feed.  It a ounce twice a day for a 1000lb horse.

Give him 60 ccs of Maalox two times a day. It will put the fire out so he can eat. Meantime, get Gastrogard on order asap.

During this time, get him eating alfalfa, SmartGI Ultra, and probiotic paste for ten days. Forco is helpful too.

This is my go to, and you can turn now around and eating again in just a few days.

THE GastroPLUS is 25% off this month or if you order through me and my prices I can do free shipping. It has worked wonders for my horses and I have a ton of positive reviews from customers. Works great with FORCO to keep the belly happy.

Is gastrogard a preventive or treatment cure product

Gastrogard is both.

Ulcergard is both. They are the same formula by the same company. Ulcergard is usually a few dollars cheaper than Gastrogard, you give a full tube like you do Ulcergard.

Difference is Ulcergard needs a prescription, Gastrogard does not. Again, they're the exact same product, just labeled differently. Drug companies trying to make money.

My vet had me treat with ulcergard- 1/3 of a tube/dose for 2 weeks.  He said you do not have to treat for 28 days like once thought. I have bought ulcergard on line without a prescription.

It will cost you around $ 900.00 unless you can get a great deal on the Gastroguard. I did it 2 years ago with my then 4 year old. I now get the smart pack GI ultra pellets Monthly and ulcer guard paste on a trip. I switched to Purina Ultium feed. So far, so good.

Switch to a low starch low sugar feed. I feed Pro Force Fuel by Nutrena. Ultium is said to be low in starch and sugar but it's not. Pro Force Fuel is lower. Feed Alfalfa and a good Probiotic such as ProBiostatin which has a 30 day money back guarantee so all you lose is your time if it doesn't work. I add Digestive ULR for ulcers.

How much does it end up costing for the treatment at this rate?

I treated with the compounded Omeprazole oral suspension that i got thorugh my vet from Weatherford Compounding pharmacy. Also, Gastrogard is the RX version and Ulcergard is non RX-both made by Merial (sp?). you can get both from Valley Vet and they were the cheaper there than any other place I saw at the time but Jeffers, etc. carry both also. I treated 2 months with the Omerprazole suspension to treat the ulcers and heal and now I just keep ulcergard on hand for stressful times like shows or long hauls as a preventative. I do have my mare on a daily ulcer/digestive supplement as well. So far (it's been a year) we have been good to go!

And as stated above-Valley Vet will contact your vet for you for the Gastrogard if that is the route you take. Now as far as treatment time, I would not do less than 28 days but work with your vet. I did 60 but my mare was still showing a few ouchy signs after the first 30. After 60- we were good!

If you go to horseprerace.com you can order generic ulcerguard for CHEAP w/o a prescription with the omeprazole. I started it last week, they come in individual tubes, less than $70 should clear it up and I did my research

I am working on a product that will a horse owner can mix their own product for ulcers. The items will be provided and the horse owner can mix it for 10 minutes and follow the suggestions to dosing the horse.Omeprazole Research by the horse owner.

The NSC content of Pro Force Fuel is 20%; the starch is max at 13% and the sugar is at max 7%.

Ultium the NSC content is 16; max starch at 10% and sugar at 6%.

Unless your horse is metabolic the sugar and starch levels in Ultium are OK.
