Location: Texas | I am pretty sure my horse has an abcess. What do you guys do for one? I have always taken them to the vet and then they usually don't do a lot. Would I be better off just seeing if my shoer can find it or packing it and letting it work it's way out? Thanks! |

Location: North Dakota | The recipe does work and soaking in epsom salt water.....and a boot to cover foot when it's open, I've been dealing with one for the last few months, thought we had it all healed up and it came back, think we're on the right track now..... |

Location: North Dakota | Mix epsom salt and gentle iodine in a bucket of hot water (hottest you can get without scorching your horse) soak it for about 30 minutes every night until you bring it to the surface. My horse likes to blow out in the bulbs or along his coronary band.
After soaking I mix a generous amount of sugar and gentle iodine, place it in a diaper and then wrap it on the foot. I'll put vet wrap over the diaper and then make a boot using gorilla tape. This mix, for whatever reason, seems to draw the abcess to the surface so I can lance it.
Once I lance it, I soak it and wrap it with the same stuff I used to draw it out. I also put them on about 7-10 days of a sulfa drug such as Uniprim or Tucoprim.
I can usually have mine healed up in a little over a week from the inital time that I've noticed him walking on three legs.
If its a deep abcess you may need your farrier to pare it out and get to the infection, but my treatment is the same. |

Location: North Dakota | I had my vet cut a small chunk out to help it drain. I soaked it every day with epsom salts in warm water for 15 minutes, then used those animalintex poultice pads wrapped in a diaper and vet wrap and duct tape. I think for any normal abscess that would be fine...but of course my horse didn't have any normal abscess. When my vet checked it again she just barely poked it and pus squirted out and just drained and drained and drained for a few minutes straight. The abscess was HUGE and almost half his hoof had to be carved out. For that I used the same thing with the addition of an antibiotic my vet prescribed and he had to wear softrides 24/7 for over a week. Now he has to wear special padded shoes until it grows out. Moral of the story is, you can try just soaking and wrapping for a few days, but I'd recommend getting a hold of the vet if you don't see any changes.
