Has any one else received their Census in the mail?
You now fill them out on line. I don't remember much of the last census, but I find this one highly personal in the questions they ask.
Whats your name, where you were born. Names of peeps who live in household. Wonder if I should list my dog, he thinks he is a person.) What kind of house you live in, how many rooms in your house, your age, how much $$ you make. What is your ethnicity.
Where do you work, how many hours did you work last year. What is your trade.
What kind of public assistance are you on.
(More questions on that topic) plus a lot more questions .
and if you don't reply, punishable by law.

Wow, incredibly personal! That seems an invasion of privacy! I haven't received one yet and hope I don't!

Btw, feel free to ignore it. If it's real, they will call you and if that doesn't work, they will send a worker to your house.

Going by some of the "official looking" things we get here at work that actually aren't, I'd be careful.

About 10 years ago I ignored it and they showed up at my door. I had to sit down with them and answer all these personal questions. I was not happy. I came home Monday evening to find another one taped to my door with a card saying to call and set up a appointment immediately. I have yet to do this because we had a death in the family this week. I got something from blue cross blue shield a while back, and it was questions like, how much do you make, does anyone in your house receive/pay child support, how many children live with you. I threw it away, got two more and the last said if i didn't reply they could cancel my insurance. I didn't comply and i still have insurance so i don't know what that was all about. I feel like any child support we give/pay is our business. Plus i'm a super private person anyway and it just flat pi$$ed me off lol

The Census is not mandatory ... you can politely tell them that you decline to participate.

But, yes some of the questions can get personal.

Don't they do the census at the beginning of each decade?  I wouldn't fill it out.

Yes the census is done at the beginning of the decade. It is mandatory because one of the uses is for congressional districts. It has other uses too. A census and its information is not released for 70 years. The last one released is the 1950 census. Many states have a state census and all that information varies from state to state.

You are required by law to answer it, truthfully and return it. I agree it's an invasion of privacy and information that the government likely already has in one form or another. If they would just search their many data bases, they would likely find all the answers on everyone without having to ask.

"Your response to this survey is required by law (Title 13, U.S. Code, Sections 141 and 193). Title 13, as changed by Title 18, imposes a penalty for not responding. We estimate this survey will take about 40 minutes to complete."

That verbiage didn’t lead us to any mandate, but a bureau web page singles out Section 121 of Title 13, which says that any adult refusing to answer a bureau survey shall be fined.

Specifically, the section refers to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, who oversees the bureau, and says: "a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age, refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100."

That’s not entirely so; the fine for refusing to answer a bureau survey can be as much as $5,000, the bureau separately says online, citing Section 3571 of Title 18.

Individuals willfully giving false answers to the government face a fine of up to $500, Section 121 says. But it states that "no person shall be compelled to disclose information related to his religious beliefs or to membership in a religious body."

Late last night I found this is a census given to select individuals.   Will read more about it when I wake up.

why in the world do they need to know what time I go to work?

Be careful what you're filling out without actually knowing who is getting the information.  The current national census was held in 2010 and the next census is scheduled for 2020 and much of it will be done using the internet.[

Definately ignore it.  Like others have said it's done every 10 years and this is not a census year.  I'm in to geneology and I love the census!  It gives so much info for future generations to learn about family history.  But, the individual census info isn't available to the public until 70 years later, until then it's used in aggregate population data.

you are only legally required to give them the number of people living at the address: Pursuant to Article I, Section 2, Clause 3 of the Constitution.

This sounds like a scam. They want to know when you go to work so they know when the house is empty. Like everyone said... 2020 is the next one.

Sometimes select people or random people are given additional questions, however, that happens during the regular census, so it still doesn't make sense that you would get this one.   I found a link to the censuses done by the Census Bureau, http://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/are-you-in-a-survey/survey-list.html.  Honestly the questions like when you go to work sound very strange, I would call the USCB to find out if it's legit.
