My vet's been contacted but won't be in town for at least a few days. Any ideas what might be wrong while I wait impatiently? He's been cross cantering, not wanting to pick up his right lead, and lots of head shaking for a while now but for the first time I think he looks off behind...

He looks off in his right hind to me. But, I'm not a good one at narrowing it down to which joint...Hoping and  for the best.

He has nothing that I can feel at all. My first thought was hocks but who knows. There has not been a time in 2 years where all my horses were sound.

His left hind is off majorly bad . He is short stepping the right to stay off the left. It's really low or really high. I would start low maybe an abcess.

I'm only a second year in vet school but my money is on the right hind, not the left hind. At least from that video. The way he's striding he's loading more weight onto that left hind leg which to me says he doesn't want to bear weight on the right hind.

After that, I've got nothing. I know what it's not but I'm not great yet at hind end lameness.

I would think hopefully abscess- is he reluctant to walk as well or does the lameness only show up at a trot?
I could help more if I could actually flex and palpate.. hard to do behind a screen.

I want to say stifle but I really am not confident in that.

It looks like the right hind. He's short stepping that stride much more than his right. Diagnosis though, I'll be praying for something able to fix!!

My horse blew an abcess on his hind foot last fall and he moved EXACTLY like how your horse is moving. Have you palpated the soft tissue around his bulbs? And ouchy spots?

I think I agree with R hind.
However I'm not convinced he's painful enough to be an abscess unless it is still quitely brewing. Abscesses IME are almost 3 legged lame. Any heat in the foot? Digital pulses? Can you put hoof testers on him? As casual dust said is he lame at a walk too? That may help rule out abscess.
I wonder about hock. How old is he?

He's 11 or 12. I can't remember. I don't have any hoof testers but I'll see if I feel any heat down there. I didn't anywhere else on his legs.

From the video I would be suspicious of the left hind, not the right and because he is counter cantering would suspect the hock, and go from there. Your vet should be able to diagnose it easily with some flexion tests. He may need his hocks injected and that is a relatively simple fix. Good Luck.

What did your vet have to say? My worry for you is that it could be a suspensory injury.

Farrier came (of course when I wasn't there so I couldn't ask him anything) but he trimmed his back hooves and didn't mention anything to me in his text. Absolutely NO heat or swelling anywhere from SI/hip area to hoof. Hopefully my vet can get here soon.

He is most definitely off on the right hind.  As someone else mentioned, watch as his left hind hits the ground.  He takes way more weight on it and also has a little hop when he pushes off of his right.  He also is lame on his right front, however, this can be compensatory for the right hind lameness.  Best thing to do is get a veterinarian to do a thorough lameness on him.

I would definitely start with the hind end and see how he flexes and then get to blocking on that right hind leg.
