| My 2 year old i'm in absolute Love with her, tons of natural talent, beautiful stride and just plain athletic but....
shes a witch. has been since i bought her. The way she kicks her stall she could make a nice bronc mare, jump and kicker. shes the type of mare that doesnt handle being around new horses very well. pin her ears, kick and bite. as soon as you step in she runs to you to get some lovin.
shes started showing me attitude while riding now, jump kicking, head shaking.
i've had witchy mares, but not this bad.
I'm hoping she grows out of this somewhat, but have you guys done to help with this sort of problem?! |

| oh I also wanted to add, she is sound and fine! just had a vet check done (she hung her leg up in a panel from kicking), so I wanted to make sure her hocks and stifle was fine. and just had her teeth done.
I know its not saddle issues or anything either.
Would Hormone imbalances cause a horse to be this dramatic, or is this just her... |

Well, from the crazy swing in temperatures and the days getting longer, both my mares are currently in heat. The one is just HORRID if she's not on something to help. I keep mine on mare magic year round - seriously, the longer you feed it the better it works. But there are many supplements that can help with these issues.
I'd get her specifically checked out for "mare" things - ovaries, uterus, etc. Get 'em ultrasounded by a vet that knows what they are looking for .... these are not things a lameness exam is going to cover when they looked at hocks, stifles, etc. |

Sooooo, in your vet check, did he ultrasound her ovaries to see if she has any cysts or persistent follicles or other abnormalities? |

No we didn't even look at her ovaries. that was a couple months ago i had that done, and since then she has got worse with her attitude!
Definatly gonna look into that, so say it has something to do with them, what would he find, and how would we treat, or manage that?!
I had to take one of my colts to get stitches cause the witch kicked her so hard
does it help I think shes pretty

| I had a mare like this pretty much to a t of what your describing. I had her veted and had a complete reproductive check up on her... she was fine ..vet even said beautiful uterus and overies ...w/e that means. had blood drawn, scoped. everything you could think of she was 100% ... conclusion she was a witch...her mother was to apparently. this mare was dominant as a 1 year old if that tells you anything. She sold before we had a chance to try it but he recamended regumate(sp?) and if it had a positive effect then to put in a marble. The girl who has her now loves her and she is going to be a barn burner. Says she is getting a better additude being turned out with mares just as mean as her. She also gets an additude adjusment when she is naughty in the warm up pen because she is not fun to ride even near other horses. I agree with everyone above the best thing for you to do is get her lady bits checked.

Location: The best kept secret in TX | I would check her ovaries as well. Make sure nothing internally is going on... She just started kicking and jumping while riding recently correct? That tells me something isn't right. Sure miles and wet saddle blankets may help, but I would have a vet check when you were able too.
My mare has to be ridden daily or she becomes a pain but it's just how she is. She's the type that will throw her hackamore off on a gate while working cattle and start broncing with me just to go back to the barn LOL and she's completely sound internally. Just gets a little....creative.... in ways to get me to take her tack off. Heck of an athelete though! |

I had a friend try a marble with her mare, it worked on one and not the other!
I do know both of her parents, sweethearts to be around, great minds on both of them! both girtty horses tho in the barrel pen.
my mare hopped the fence from the yearlings to be with the broodmares all summer.
I bought her knowing she had some fire and attitude, and I dont mind attitude, but she has a little extra I dont want to deal with.
she is okay to ride around other horses, just cant be tied near them or when i turn her out shes the boss one of the pen. |

ya just recently the jumping and kicking, she went on a tear for a couple weeks were she would shake her head for hours non stop and grab the bit and run off, I got that nipped in the but, now shes started this.
If i can keep a step ahead of her (throw some roll backs) and just things to keep her mind focused on me, shes great! I have no where else to ride but the indoor right now, so I thought maybe shes just bored of circles cause shes too smart for her own good.
But I'm talking with my vet now about looking into her ovaries! |

Let me say, I have a mare that is a natural witch. I bought her as a long yearling and now she's 21 and still a witch.
Some mares have things going on that can be managed. A persistent follicle can be remedied usually with one shot. Other things can be managed with hormone therapy.
I have implanted fillies with hormones that helped them. A marble didn't work on mine. Some people put copper in their water source or feed bucket, some people feed raspberry leaves. Not every thing will work on every mare.

| I had a mare that started turning into a complete witch to me. Biting, kicking, awful to ride. Had blood work done on her and she had lime disease. I felt awful for not finding out sooner. |

| We have a gelding who hates being around other horses. Now he is a seasoned horse, so you don't really see anything different while riding him, but he would kick the stall, fence, trailer like crazy and be super crabby around other horses. We just decided to separate him. He has a large pen to himself that isn't forcefully by any others. After doing that, he is a completely different horse to be around. He will even walk up to us to let us catch him (had to chase him around a small pen before). He isn't nearly as flighty as before. It is just amazing how his whole demeanor changed. |

Location: Piedmont, OK | All I have is mares. I keep copper tubing in the water tanks cuz that is something my grandpa told me helps with hormones. I really don't know for sure if it work but I use it. lol. I also give them all Raspberry leaf (from Animal Element of course) and it seems to help most of them. But I had one in particular that is very witchy and was sore in her back and the vet injected her ovaries and she is much easier to get along with now! |

Location: Somewhere in N.C. | I have one of those mares too. I've tried everything until finally, I put her on ProBiostatin. She has been on it almost 3 weeks and I so far, I can tell a huge difference. Not sure if it will last, but I will take whatever I can get. I am assuming since this worked, she must have had uclers or starting to have them. I don't know yet, but so far, so good. |

| she has no sore spots that i can find when i touch her.
but she also just started doing this as well, swishing her tail and kick her belly a couple times when I unsaddle her. so im wondering if it is maybe ulcers or ovaries.
she got sick on me a couple months ago and had a fever and went off feed. she has always been a witch, but just the kicking has started.
I know she is tickleish or something, cause she hates a breast collar, she hates a strap touching her. |
