I have a 17 year old gelding that I turned out when he was nine because I had decided to quit running.  I wanted to bring him back a year ago, but he was a 2/5 on the lameness scale and the vet (not a performance horse vet, so he wasn't really giving me many options) advised against it.  Had him injected (he had some inflammation), lost some weight and got on top of his feet (thrush and they were grown out) and he's been moving pretty nicely ever since.  I am taking him to get his teeth done on Monday and I am going to see if it would be possible to bring him back as a backup horse.  I'll have a regular lameness exam done and x rays as needed, but I'm curious if there is anything else I need to look for since he's getting up there in years and has been turned out for so long.   I want to put him on Pentosan or Adequan to help him out all that I can, but are there any other options I can ask about?  Here is from about two weeks ago:
